Hey Everybody...

I would just like to say thanks for all the info and for actually posting that you've taken an 812s to an 832. All the other forums I've read on this subject, no one every states weather they tried it or not and if it worked. After reading through this...I feel a lot more comfortable flashing my812s to do dual layer...now if only the prices on dual layer would come down.

All I can simply say is that Codeguys ROCK!!!! ALL LiteOn users should pay a great homage to them(Personally built a shrine to them, but enough about me!!). Have used their "Tweaked" firmware for ages and NO PROBLEMS. Original Drive was LiteOn SOHW-812S, but have on many occasions flashed the drive for testing purposes to the following -
Sony DW-U18A(Rebadged LiteOn SOHW-812S)
Sony DRU-700A(Rebadged LiteOn SOHW-832S)
LiteOn SOHW-832S

and have found that the best Firmware Mod fr the SOHW-812S is to the SOHW-832S for both burn quality(-/+R, +R DL) and media compatibility.

I use their OMNIPATCHER to tweak the firmware AND SAVE IT AS A ".BIN"
I ALWAYS FLASH MY LITEON DRIVES IN WINDOWS(XP PRO/SP1) WITH LTNFLASH AND ALWAYS CHECK THE "UPDATE BOOT CODE".

You can just update but THEN COMPARE THE CHECKSUM OF THE DRIVE FIRMWARE TO THAT OF THE ".BIN". NOTICE THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT THAT IT WHY I ALWAYS UPADTE BOOT CODE!!!

hi there :) nice post, this subject seems to have been well documented now !!! :)

well i'll add my little rock to the pile : i got a liteon 812S03 original firmware, and i wonder about the best DVD for it ... and about the meaning of the blue histogram ... as the yellow peaks, less there are better is burned the DVD ?

for a 8x speed memorex (CMC MAG E01 brand) burned at 4x i got this :

and for a 8x speed Ridisc (TTG02 brand) burned at 4x i got this :

==> the results at 2,4 x and 2x speed burn are awfull, like 10 times more errors .......
but curiously, it cannot burn DVD+R at 6x nor 8x ... memorex ones i mean ....

i'm gonna test the latest 832S firmware & then reply to tell you the truth about it :)

My DVD Drive is dead !!!!...

well hello back :) :) :)

so i did what i did, patching my liteon 812S03 with the 832S modified (quality) firmware ......................... the resultas are.................

GOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!

with nero it recognize it as a double layer DVD recorder !!!!

burns are better i guess (PI errors seems random but less PI failures.... at 8x), no images posted now but later i'll try :)
In fact i made a complete file document on these tests, using RITEK, VERBATIM, TDK, NO NAME, SAMSUNG & MEMOREX DVD-/+R disks, and it essentially depends on the disk quality u use : Verbatim & RITEK seems to be the best ones, but since results randomly show PI Failures, the LITEON DVD recorder seems not to be the best one....

lets try PIONEER !!!!!!!!!

The 811S is a "1S" series drive, it is not compatible with this procedure, and I'm amazed it is still responding - far from dead.

Reflash it using a "flashfixed" firmware, or a binary firmware and flash utility, back to 811S firmware.


Only the "2S" (812S/832S)  and the "51S" (451S/851S) are compatible with this hack - the first generation "11S" are not.
