emperor -> NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/19/2004 5:19:21 PM)

* Introduction

Herrie done it again! A new firmware for the NEC 2500A based at the retail v1.07 going to be released soon, that based on HP 520i 2.21 firmware and features:

-Identified as NEC 2500A (for easy updating in Windows)
-Dual Layer support
-Bitsetting
-RPC1
-Rip Lock removed
-Improved media support from 107v2b4

Today we test this new firmware and present you our test results...Enjoy!

Herrie has released a beta version at rpc1.org forum, with DL function enabled...

* Installing the firmware

The firmware upgrade was done from the already upgraded NEC 2510A vKOP2 -> NEC 2500A v1.07 DLBS, under DOS. The drive was installed as MASTER at SECONDARY IDE bus, the upgrade was smooth, no problems encountered...

Lets see the new abilities of the drive:

* Nero Info Tool v2.21

* DVDInfoPro v2.47
[image]local://upfiles/16874/DB9FB1C1B8E14BA69EDA70D91F1FF2A2.png[/image]

* VSO Inspector
[image]local://upfiles/16874/996448AD2DE445CD986F394838693F5C.png[/image]

The testing method would be the same as with the NEC 2500A>2510A thread, burning DL media and checking back the burning quality.

This thread will keep updating so check out frequently...! [;)]

emperor -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/19/2004 6:35:27 PM)

- Burning DL project

The drive recognized the empty Mitsubishi Chemicals Double Layer media without any problem. We used CopyToDVD from VSO Software v3.0.15 to burn the project. The project was an ISO image (Gladiator - Special Edition Disc 1) with burned size of 6.86GB.

CopyToDVD started writing and finished after 37mins.

[image]local://upfiles/16874/FCA4F22F2EBD46DFBF9BCA16D7043BCB.png[/image]

Note: We didn't used any software to change the booktype setting, the burned disc had DVD-ROM booktype, so we assume everything is done by the firmware automatically...(have to confirm this!)

emperor -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/19/2004 10:50:11 PM)

- Testing burning quality

* Nero CD-DVD Speed graph (with NEC 2500A v1.07 DLBS)
[image]local://upfiles/16874/079D1CAFAFB34819AECF7ECB4BD3C831.png[/image]

No problems here, the reading transfer graph is perfect.

* Nero CD-DVD Speed graph (with LiteOn 812S-> DRU700A)
[image]local://upfiles/16874/A1F2D884316243B4A7C1AA61759DE315.png[/image]

The modded 812S->DRU700A drive, also reads the burned DL media without any issues.

* Nero CD-DVD Speed graph (with LiteON SOHD-167T)
This is where the problems started. The drive recognizes the burned media as 31.25GB sized [&:], which at least gives us headache. Notice that the DL burned media with the 2510A firmware was read correctly as supposed too (6.86GB). Below is the DVDInfoPro screenshot with media properties (perhaps we got the super violet recorder and didn't knew? [:D]):

[image]local://upfiles/16874/D77F90CE45914F85BA591A34C3A9E19E.png[/image]

The transfer graph is smooth but the software halts when reaches the end point, since drive failed to recognize correctly the inserted disc, we had to restart PC.

[image]local://upfiles/16874/D1BE44F489184F798657D750B956EF21.png[/image]

Notice that during playback with PowerDVD v5.00, we noticed some glithces, movie started not from 0mins, but from 13mins, but after going back and fordward you could view the movie without any problem, the movie was there, it just seems sometimes the drive jumped it, we don't know if this issue comes from the used media/firmware/software!

emperor -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 12:22:39 AM)

- Testing burning quality (continues...)

* LiteOn SOHW-832S Transfer Rate
[image]local://upfiles/16874/538AE53E4B694F09AA4ABD423B8577C3.png[/image]

* LiteOn SOHD-167T Scan
Tried to scan the disc with Nero CD-DVD Speed, the software automatically calculated as the end point 3199MB, probably due to the fact that disc is regonized as 31250Mb...CDSpeed hasn't specific designed for DVD+R DL 31.25GB burned media [:D]
[image]local://upfiles/16874/99ACF523D0454F818A0C6ED2975AA3A7.png[/image]

* LiteOn SOHW-832S CD-DVD Speed Scan (to come)
* LiteOn SOHW-812S->SONY DRU-700A CD-DVD Scan (to come)

The scan with SOHD-167T doesn't give much information since stops around 3.5GB. The scan with the retail SOHW-832S isn't very good and the scan with the LiteOn SOHW-812S->DRU700A is not good at all. More tests have to be done...

McGeyser -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 2:22:01 AM)

This is my first post here, and I would like to say how impressed I am with you guys. You are on the cutting edge of technology and giving us some great input and advice.

Emperor, would you say at this point that the non bit-setting Beta 107 FW is more stable for burning DL media than the new bit-setting 107 FW?

If I were to upgrade to the Beta 107 from retail FW, could I easily upgrade to the 107 Final version from Beta 107? I realize I can not return to retail FW, is this the same problem that would limit me from flashing further revisions of FW?

Thanks for your time and research we all appreciate it.

emperor -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 7:20:49 AM)

Hi McGeyser, welcome to our forum and thanks for your kind comments. I think we must compare the two burned media from the NEC 2510A and 2500A v1.07 DLBS soon at another seperate thread...

We used a retail NEC 2500A, transformed to NEC 2510A and reverted back to NEC 2500A with v1.07 DLBS features, without any problems...I dont know if this covers you.

yangxi -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 7:27:44 AM)

Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID RICOHJPNW11
Media Product Revision Number 01h
Book Type DVD+RW
Media Type DVD+RW

I using herrie modify firmware 2500DLBS , thats dvd+rw causing 'Power Calibration Errors'

emperor -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 7:41:00 AM)

Yes this is a known problem, as Herrie said "...Currently working on DVD+RW issue causing 'Power Calibration Errors' when trying to burn DVD+RW. When this is fixed you can expect it .." [;)]

anyone ??

wesociety -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 9:37:00 AM)

emperor, thank you for once again posting detailed results and screenshots.
I would like to hear about standalone compatibility testing now that you have a DL disc burnt with DVD-ROM booktype!
Please test on as many standalones as you can!
Thanks.

emperor -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 12:26:03 PM)

wesociety thanks for your comments, we will measure the discs first correctly to see the quality and then test the compatibility, we cannot be sure about the results 100% since its not a retail NEC 2510A drive [&:]

AlpineMan -> RE: NEC 2500A v1.07 with DL and Bitsetting (5/20/2004 4:26:42 PM)

Yet another great work! Will this firmware upgrade work if it's done straight from an NEC ND-2500A w/ firmware 1.07 to the new Herrie firmware, or will I need to first flash the 2500A w/ KOP2's firmware then Herrie's firmware? Have you tried the burned DVD's on a set-top DVD player? Thanks.

That is understood.
Thanks again for posting! I'm looking forward to your additional results.

I think i have ansewered this to other post, but Herrie will intoruce both Windows and DOS flashers, meaning you can make the NEC2500A v1.0X firmware to v1.07 DLBS
