The Verbatim 16X DVD+R media supported at 16X by almost all current 16X DVD+R recorders. We performed several tests to see which drive is not only the fastest but also has the highest writing quality. For all tests we used Nero CDSpeed v3.21 create data disc function and scanned all discs with a Plextor PX-712A (firmware 1.05, Plextools v2.16 - medium accuracy - BURST scan mode).

- Test Results

As the test results showed, the fastest drive came from LiteON (SOHW-1633S) with an average recording speed of 11.96X resulting a total recording time of 5:48mins. The BenQ DW1620A came second with 11.45X and 5:52mins, the NEC ND-3500A third with 11.69X and 6:04mins and the Pioneer DVR-108 last with 10.28X and 6:48mins.

If you are wondering why the ND-3500A came third even it had highest average recording speed than DW1620A the reason lies at the recording time during the lead-in/out area, as it seems the ND-3500A needs few extra seconds to end the task.

Ok we burned the discs, how is the writing quality?

* The burn with the highest quality comes from Pioneer DVR-108A with almost perfect image, 0.02 average and 9 max PIE and no POE/POF errors!
* The ND-3500A follows with 0.31 average, 140 max PIE but with POE and no POF errors
* The SOHW-1633S comes third with 0.60 average, 243 max PIE but with POE and no POF error
* The DW1620A created a rather bad disc with 2.04 average, 923 max PIE and POE/POF errors...

Below you will find the Nero CDSpeed writing graphs & the Plextools scans. Enjoy

* Appendix

Note:
* PIE errors are displayed with blue colour
* POE errors are displayed with brown colour
* POF errors are displayed with red colour
* A perfect burn should return very low PIE and no POE/POF errors

I was looking at your speed3 1633 burn scan and it does not show any WOPC , unlike the 3500 , 1620. Now an I wrong or does the 1633 use WOPC for 12x and 16x burns, and if it does, where are speed spikes?

KenW, SOHW-1633S is not using any kind of WOPC, who told you it does? Haven't see WOPC with any LiteON drive latetly, i don't know if LiteON will add this with a future firmware upgrade

I think i read it on some posts on cd freaks, ya i know I should have checked harder. but i guess the post somehow stuck in my head. it was about code65536/codekings omnipatcher and something about why it could not strat swap for speeds over 8x, I guess the person posting was blowing smoke , it was not code that said it, it was some other poster.

btw here is little something to have look at, this is yuden000t02 burned on BS0C fw at 8x

and under it is the same media burned on 1620 B7H9 fw at 16x

speed3 creat data disk

Oki but in this test Pioneer does most of it's writing @ 12x hence the better quality. Regrading what KenW said I think it is only a matter of firmwares who did best in this test... So maybe should try an even more detalied test with different firmwares and more than one disc burnt by each unit. For the moment it seems that Verbatim 16x are realy good discs.

I can't imagine the benq burns so badly. It doesn't go with all the very good scans I've seen of the benq with +r media.

Why 3500 and 1620 have such curve writing graph, and 1633 not?

Cause LiteON 1633 doesn't include a WOPC function
