My problem.
Got the ND-6500A, put in my laptop, Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000, did not find the NEC... Solder between 45 and 47, FINE, the computer finds the NEC burner, Nero says no Image Recorder? DVD Decrypter cant lock the unit, so it stops and refuse to burn DVD. What to do? Tried to look for the 6500Boot.zip file but did not find it enywere

Nero infotool says that the driver is L: but in exlorer it is D:... dont understand this....
Nero says Firmware 2.22. And it is a master on the second IDE channel, with DMA off.
My HD is on the Primary Channel with DMA on

Looked at page 1 and dont find were to download enything??? Can someone pleasse mail me the file?

More Q: What is the difference betwene 2.xx and 4.xx firmware?
Is it good to have DMA on for the NEC? if so How do I do it?

Thank you

I have Toshiba Notebook and I purchased the ND-6500A Manufactured on JAN 2005. Went to install and got IDE ERROR #1 took drive and installed in my HP Notebook and it reads it fine. Performed MOD by shorting PIN 45 and 47. My question is do I need to do anything else to get this to work in the toshiba? I have not tried the modded version in it yet as I do not have the notebook here. Do I have to update Firmware or will the MOD be enough? If I have to update firmware on the drive what Version do I use? Where do I get it? and if I do have to use firmware, after I update firmware do I remove solder from pin 45 and 47?

Please help!
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm sorry for dummy question, but I just got ND-6500A and NERO shows firmware 2.N0. What does it mean and can I patch it?
Thanks.

Tummy -> RE: NEC ND-6500A official firmware overview (4/12/2005 12:25:59 AM)

Hi Hardy/emperor/Snake.

I think I did a bit of a weird thing.

I flashed my NEC 6500A with 2.23 to 4.24. It recognizes in one notebook as Secondary Master and is usable, but I can't update the BIOS on it to any version.

The problem is that I want to use this drive in my new notebook, which needs the drive to be Primary Slave. It worked fine before I flashed the BIOS (2.23) but now does not (after flashing to 4.24). I have NOT run 6500boot or 6500main - well I have, but both tell me that they've already been run. I used winflash to flash to 4.24 and I've tried everything listed in this thread to get back to version 2.23 or 2.24 but with no luck. Every attempt to flash will yield a system "hang" and report there was an I/O error sending the image to the drive. The drive light simply flashes forever.

Can somebody please help? Thanks...!

Tummy -> RE: NEC ND-6500A official firmware overview (4/12/2005 2:16:01 AM)

Ooohhhh I fixed it...

I soldered pins 47 and 45, which let the drive been seen in my new notebook as primary master (overrode my HD). That allowed me to reflash using 2.24 BIOS. Then I undid the soldered pins and yahoooo!! back to normal.

Thanks to all previous posters for all of the information.

@Tummy thanks for the info, i am glad that you worked it out

@nick_boy, you have a PM message, backup your firmware and send it to me [8D]

Patuba -> RE: NEC ND-6500A official firmware overview (4/12/2005 1:41:05 PM)

I have a new laptop with the NEC 6500a, I updated the firmware to 2.40. The drive rips very slow, up to 1.6x on Dual Layer discs and 3x on Single Layer using DVD Decrypter.

Does anyone have suggestions to increase it's performance? It's a slave off the primary channel with DMA enabled.

I used NECWinFlash to update the firmware. I also used a DOS boot disk floppy and had the same result.

emperor -> RE: NEC ND-6500A official firmware overview (4/12/2005 1:47:29 PM)

probably just use a Riplock firmware in case you are ripping DVD-Video discs

Patuba -> RE: NEC ND-6500A official firmware overview (4/12/2005 2:13:11 PM)

I've tried 6500Fast and 6500RPC1 and haven't noticed a difference with either one.

emperor -> RE: NEC ND-6500A official firmware overview (4/12/2005 2:53:40 PM)

then you cannot do much...

Hi There,

Brothers, Many Thanx - You Made Very Pretty Job About NEC-6500A Drive / Firmwares Posts[;)]

- What Do You Think About "2N0.bin" Firmare Update ? Any News / Goods ?

- I'm Currently Testing It, Because Today I'm Successfully Flash NEC ND-6500A Drive With 2.N0 Version (Originally Bundled With 2.24 Firmware)

- All Works Fine (Burning / Reading), But I Can't Find Any Improvements - At The Moment...(Maybe Only One: It Looks That So Drive May Have Lower CPU Usage, Than With Firmware 2.24)

Here Is "Nero InfoTool" Screen Shots Before / After:

I just did a burn on my NEC 6500 in my laptop (Intel Centrino M735) with 1 GB RAM, and I did this burn using the laptop battery, no AC cord, using firmware 2.N0, results are below, and appear to be fantastic! I'm impressed with this fantastic little drive.
