AND it still sees the Verbatim dual layer 4x 8.5GB as 3.99GB. The Nero info tool gives me a media id: MKM 01RD30 also at 3.99GB.

Your Verbatim MKM 01RD30 discs are of the DVD-R DL (Dual Layer) format ("dash" variant).

Your NEC ND-3500AG drive doesn't support this format - it only supports the "plus" variant DVD+R DL (Double Layer) instead (and of course also all the Single Layer formats).

You will have to get some Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL (MKM 001) media instead, or get a newer burner.

The DVD+R DL format is the most compatible format anyways if you want to burn video and play your disc in a DVD player.

hi everybody!

i've read as much as i could here and other forums, but i'm still not 100% sure of one thing. It appears that this drive does not allow burning +DL at more than 4x, right? Can you please confirm/infirm this? the reason I'm asking is because I have an old 2.18 Dangerous Bros firmware which appears to have removed all speed burning limitations. is it safe (quality wise) to use it to burn +DL at, say, 6x?

thanks a lot
gigi

I slow things down... focus on quality not quantity or speed.  Whats the rush???  With DL and the NEC, not sure I would go above 2.4... But I no longer have my ND3500A.  That has been gone for a while now.

Probably with 3500 series 2.4X at DL is best, with Verbatim DL media of course

hi there,

i got this one: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10562
a usb2.0 drive containing the nec nd3500 ag with firmware 1.06 up and running.

i bought some octron dvd-r 16x discs yesterday and they cannot be burned in any way. (my other burner, a hp dvd writer 300c cannot burn them as either)

ritek got a datasheet online which says that firmware 2.1A is needed to burn these discs.
is there a way to get one of the retail firmware to run on my oem drive? do i need to take the drive out of the usb box?

help. please.

I just bought the 100 pack Memorex 16x DVD-R but my drive cannot read the disc at all and my firmware is 2.19.  Do I need to update the firmware or am I SOL?

Edit: Nevermind I just updated to 2.1B and it works fine now

steelers078636 -> RE: NEC 3500 and OEM official firmware overview (6/1/2007 2:41:21 AM)

I have a 3500AG (8x - so I thought).  I was fine until the newer TDK 16x only burned at 4x on my burner.  Then I found newer firmware (DVD Decrypter has a link to click on) version 2.58.  I already had 2.98 which I guess is an older version?  Anyway I tried to install the file but you can't unless you use Binflasher or something like that, which I will say was very simple to do.  Check this out, now not only does it recognize the newer TDK 16x as compatible for 6x and 8x, it actually works on 10x and 12x.  I'm very happy as I was going to purchase a 16x burner but have no need now because newer firmware turned my 8x into a 12x.  May not work with everyone though but hope it does.

bugnotme -> RE: NEC 3500 and OEM official firmware overview (6/13/2007 9:40:38 PM)

Hi, just wanted to thank this thread!
I had 3500AG with firmware 2.88 (came with fujitsu siemens pc) and it refused to burn any of my 16x platinum dvd-r's. But with Binflasher I updated it to Liggy's and Dee's "Original NEC 3500 Firmware 2.1b - fast" and now it can burn those dvd's even as fast as 16x [:)]
