Updated 30/11/2004

- Added v2.B9 for Ricoh MP5163DA

A quick comparison of the writestrats show 2.18 and 2.B9 are the same except DL on 2.18 is newer. Nothing else to report.

Hello. I'm new here. I actually just have a question about my firmware since I haven't tried burning a DVD since the upgrade. I bought an OEM 3500a from NewEgg, but the firmware listed for my drive properties was 2.16. According to the info here, x.1x is retail firmware. So did I actually get a retail drive? Or is it possible that the OEM drive shipped (and works properly) with retail firmware? I'm asking because I just flashed the drive up to 2.18 and it reads CDs and DVDs alright, but I haven't tried burning yet. I'm a bit confused about a supposedly OEM drive shipping with retail firmware. Is there anything I should be concerned about?

The OEM and Retail drives will have the same firmware. The only differences between OEM and Retail drives are usually just the
packaging (ie a pretty box with pictures vs plain brown box),
software (retail drives often include software)
and in some instances the retail drives might have a different front bezel or housing.

This format of firmware is reffering to Firmware that is supplied by the original manufacturer or OEM. In your case NEC. Many otherfirmware you see listed here in these forums may work for the NEC drive but they may come from either other manufactures like TDK or MadDog or they are firmware that has been hacked to improve its functionallity.

I'm fairly new to this too, but I have had good luck with 2.C8SE on my NEC3500.

Hope this helps.

I have to disagree.. I looked closely at 2.B9.. it has a lot of media codes speeded down in DVD-R section!
Maybe even other sections..

hey guys, i got a problem.my NEC-ND 3500A (silver^^) seems to be broken.well i does strange sounds like klack klack..and it wasnt able to read or burn dvds or cds..so i thoght maybee thats a problem with the DVD-burner itself, so lets try a firmware-update..but i didnt realise that i loose my guaranty if i do that firmware-update myself..
and the other problem is that is missed to do a backup of my originally firmware..
well i bought it Augut the 13th this year...that´s why i think it might got the 2.16 version..
And i hope, if i might "update" from 2.18 to 2.16 the guys @ the shop wont realize it...
So if anybody might help me with a link to this 2.16 version that would be great..thx so far

and before i forget: is it possible to break a DVD+RW(TDK) by burning and stoping the leadout-process?

I have to disagree.. I looked closely at 2.B9.. it has a lot of media codes speeded down in DVD-R section! Maybe even other sections..

Hi quikee, glad to see you around

Can you please explain how you get the speed data? What software do you use?
Thanks

Edit: Just found your NecDump software - great application!

Currently I am using the 2.C8 SE firmware for my NEC 3500A.
Yesterday i tried, didnt know why i didnt do it before, i opened info tool to check the speeds, and it reports thats my drive is a 12x speed dvd burner??
firmware flaw, or some other thing?

Hm... have you had a max. 12x capable disc in the drive when you checked this ? =)
Look at my attachments... with a max. 12x capable disc inserted... ;)
If no disc is inserted in reports speeds for CD. It all depends on what disc you have in the drive and it's not a firmware issue.. ;)

WOW! I've visited here a few times during the last couple years, but never really explored the depth and breadth of the reviews and forums. Until today that is. I just spent about 3 1/2 hours here looking for a good replacement for my dead Plextor 504. I am truly amazed with the amount of clear, concise technical informtion, not only in the reviews, but in the forums as well! My thanks for a great site and thanks also to the many knowledgable members.
