The blank media list for firmware revision 1.0f is now fairly large. It seems that the media listed (for 44x writing) is often not available commercially, not specified well enough to differentiate from similar products from the same manufacturer or the media product is private labeled in the USA and therefore not identifiable.

Where can we find out how to identify the best media and determine where best to buy it?

I was looking to find out more about the Ritek (New Js Type) but couldn't locate anything about any product ID's, performance or availability.

In adition to disabling the DMA in Windows, I disabled UltraDMA in the BIOS and set the IDE Mode to "Mode 4" in the BIOS. With this setting, the drive was able to burn a CD in 1.5 minutes. I have an AMD-K6 2 400 on a SOYO 5EMM with a VIA 586B chipset.

Hi there!

I'm currently owning a Plextor 24x and I consider upgrading. One important thing is that the new drive would have to be black, so I think I'll have to decide between the Yamaha F1 and the Plextor 48x.

But there is one point i can't really find in the reviews (if it is there i appologise in advance):
"Noise"
How noise are these drives? I mean it wouldn't be too much of a problem if they'd produce some noise during burning, but how do those two drives compare when you look at the noise they produce while e.g. playing a game?

And which one does detect CDs faster after they have been inserted?


I know that these questions are no typical CR-Writer questions, but I guess BOTH of them would be pretty decent writers for me, so these are the questions I would like to sort out before I buy one.

The Yamaha CRW-F1 is a relatively quiet drive. You have to remember though, that the higher the spin speed of the disc, the more noise it will make. The F1 spins discs at 44X, or 8700 rpm, so it makes more noise than your current drive (24X).

yeah, sure, but does it *always* speed up the disk (during reading, not writing) when not really necessary? Like... audio/video Playback off CD or checking for a copy protected game cd. Some drives really speed up the disk even for these tasks - this is just unecessary noise :-/

These were the negatives at the conclusion of the review (last June):

- Drive is lower than competition due to its 44X maximum speed
- Doesn't support EFM correction for SafeDisc v2.51.021+ builds
- Limited media support for 44X writing speed (OWSC On)
- Limited media support for 12X re-writing speed
- Has issues with Key2Audio and 99min blank media

With the firmware changes and improved media availabilty, how would you present the negatives today?

Try reading the YAMAHA-F1DX drive review, it will show less negatives
