Network-Attached Storage (NAS) servers are finally making headway in the consumer market. Enthusiasts with multiple computers have been doing network backups for years, but the expertise and/or time required to setup a NAS operating system has been quite prohibitive for the everyday user. Now, intelligent companies such as QNAP are at the forefront of the home NAS server revolution. ThinkComputers takes a look at the TS109 NAS server, a SATA hard drive enclosure with a network port, two USB host ports, and even an eSATA host port. This little guy runs Linux, too.

A Networked Attached Storage (NAS) appliance can serve the purpose of a home file server, and do it by sipping only 20 watts of electricity. Some NAS devices have other value-added services like print servers, media servers, full-features web server, and other handy features that can easily replace a large noisy computer. QNAP is one company that has several innovative NAS appliances on offer. Their TS-109 Pro NAS server has a ton of exciting features that cater to the home and small business user. The unit also has some nifty features to dynamically expand storage and copy data to the unit without a computer. Not only can the unit serve files, but it also has support as a Media Server for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, in addition to all of the other standard NAS features.

Nowadays a lot of people have a dedicated home server for data storage, downloads or both. The TS-109 Pro is the latest fully featured NAS server by QNAP, it allows you to house everything your home-serving heart requires in a little box without making your energy bill go through the roof. Among the included features are Gigabit Ethernet, BitTorrent Downloader, Apache+PHP+MySQL Server, FTP and more. Since the system is based on Linux it can also be customized to suit more advanced users.

When we reviewed the Synology CS-407e we thought it wasn't possible to get any more features at this price point but QNAP has proved us wrong. Overall performance is particularly good and although the Download Station feature is of limited value there's little this box can't do - the backup features are also a cut above the rest.
