"At CES Cameron and I paid a visit to QNAP?s booth to take a look at several new NAS appliances and servers the company launched at the show. Little did we know that the new product lineup would be so extensive, almost a top to bottom refresh. The first of the new dual core Intel Atom products has been here for a month now and I have to come right out and say that I am very impressed. It is a good thing too since the TS-419P TurboNAS we reviewed last year didn?t fare as well as we were hoping. Even though the TS-419P and TS-459 look nearly identical outside, the two are completely different inside. The 419P used a Marvell processor and in our testing we felt that it and the firmware held the NAS back from performing as well as it could have. The latest run of firmware from QNAP and the new dual core Atom processor have now cleared those issues, but it comes at a higher initial cost to users. We will touch more on the cost and the additional productivity in the conclusion."

Network storage is a concept that many people use without a second thought in corporate environments, but what about at home? Count the number of PCs in your house and tell me it wouldn't be nice to have one central location for backups, video and music storage, and everything else. All that and much more is readily available in a Network Attached Storage server. The QNAP TS-259 Pro NAS server uses a custom Linux distro and a powerful, energy-efficient 1.66GHz Intel Atom D510 CPU with 1GB of DDR2-800 memory to eliminate any potential bottlenecks. Dual Intel Gigabit Ethernet controllers allow failover safety and teaming, while two SATA drive bays offer single disk, JBOD, and RAID 0/1 configurations. Benchmark Reviews examines the QNAP TS-259 Pro in detail here, and tests its performance against a wide variety of NAS servers. We also have a pleasent surprise for Win7 users.

"Like the QNAP servers we have previously reviewed, this model is more than just a file storage device (a traditional NAS). So many extra features are also included, which mean this server can often work as an all-in-one device for many small businesses. Other than storing files on network shares, you can use the TS-459 Pro as a print server, web server, database server, download/torrent station, media streaming and IP camera surveillance station amongst other things. There are even QKPG plugin applications which allow you to expand the NAS further, providing enthusiasts a way to code their own software or use some of the community maintained software (including some handy tools such as a mail server and Tomcat)."

"The QNAP NMP-1000 is actually one of the better media players we have tested here at Legit Reviews. Never before have we seen a player on the market that has as many features and functions that is packed in this QNAP media player. After using the unit for a few weeks, we can see why QNAP chose the name NMP - or "Network Multimedia Player". If you only want a media player that can communicate with your home network, then you will probably gag at the price of the QNAP NMP-1000. At over $400, it is far and away the most costly player we have seen. The thing is, if you want a box that completely integrates into your home theater AND your home network with full-fledged network sharing capabilities, then there is no other player out there that is more functional than the NMP-1000..."

Network storage has become the convenient answer to centralized data for corporate enterprise environments. The QNAP TS-459 Pro NAS server uses the energy-efficient 1.66GHz Intel Atom D512 processor with 1GB of DDR2 system memory to enable VMware Ready iSCSI for virtualization deployments. Dual Gigabit Ethernet network interfaces allow failover safety, while four SATA drives deliver basic-disk or RAID configurations. In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests performance of the QNAP TS-459 Pro against several other network attached storage servers.

"Testing NAS servers is a complicated and a time consuming task. For the most part modern NAS products are computers in their own right with some using Intel Core2 Duo processors and up to 4GB of RAM. When writing a NAS review it?s easy to focus on the hardware and capabilities, but often the software, applications and setup functionality take a back seat even though these functions are just as important as the hardware. To help ease the strain on both the reader and the writer, today we are going to cover the latest firmware / software release from QNAP. Just weeks ago we ran a similar editorial on Thecus? software."

"Today for review I?ve got a little NAS box from Qnap called the TS-219P. It supports two 3.5? or 2.5? SATA hard drives and is truly feature packed with the ability to become your main network storage device at home and while on the go. Not only is it for storage and backups, you can stream from it, use it as a mini-surveillance system, a web sever, or even a stand alone torrent machine. "

"After looking around it was clear that most consumers NAS servers were all in the same boat, great specifications for the entire NAS except for the processor. QNAP has taken note and has just released the new TS-419P Turbo NAS with a 1.2 GHz processor that is bound to perform better than the slower offerings from others. Generally a large speed increase means a significant price increase, but the new TS-419P is priced well within the consumer market range and is one of the best values going into the 2009 holiday shopping season. If there is someone special in your life this shopping season and they take pictures on a digital camera often, then what could be a better gift than the gift of security?"

Today we are moving the spot light to NAS Servers with the QNAP TS-509 Pro. The 509 isn't designed to sit in an enthusiast's computer room, but many will eventually end up being used by power users like myself. If the Thecus N4100PRO impressed you with features, prepare to be blown away. The TS-509 Pro goes far beyond anything a normal consumer or prosumer would ever use under normal circumstances. The good thing is that QNAP has mastered ease of use when it comes to configuration. Many features that you may have passed off as unusable for your situation will eventually get used because they are just so easy in implement.

Overall, this is an excellent showing from QNAP. In as little as one afternoon, it is possible to set up a network surveillance system that can be monitored from any computer with an internet connection. Versatility is also a strong suit - cameras can use a wired or wireless connection, recording can take place on any day and time you wish, and external drives can be attached for backup or to increase storage capacity.
