Once upon a time many years ago the 42PF5521D's performance might have been acceptable on a budget product. But today, with new plasmas from Panasonic and especially Pioneer setting new performance benchmarks on what feels like an almost weekly basis, the 42PF5521D simply isn't good enough - at any price. And not for the first time we're left thinking that it's high time ALIS was put out to grass.

Philips has a completely restyled flagship 1080p Ambilight HDTV on the way and although it has yet to be officially announced I've got the full PDF in front of me.

Find a 37in LCD TV with a price tag of under £700 attached to it, and you'll usually find it wearing a brand name you've probably never heard of; a brand name more usually associated with the PC than the AV world; or a brand name long-renowned for focusing exclusively on budget products, such as Goodmans or Bush. What you wouldn't expect to find is the word 'Philips' plastered boldly along the bottom.

One company that's been in the wireless audio business from the very beginning is Philips, with its Streamium range of products. We reviewed its wireless-music-system-in-a-box - the Streamium WACS700/05 - over a year ago now and it has now been given an update.

You only have to look at it to see it's no plasticky cheap job, as it glistens with quality thanks to its glossy black bezel. It even sports Philips' Ambilight technology, whereby fluorescent tubes down the TV's sides throw out pools of light that can be coloured in sympathy with the main colour tones of the picture. What's more, the 50PF9631D's Ambilight system is the 'stereo' incarnation, whereby different colours can be emitted from each side.

One of my biggest peeves when reviewing HDTV sets is when the transitions between light and darks on screen loose detail and become pixilated looking blobs. Most all HDTVs I have reviewed do this to some extent, as does the 50" Philips Ambilight Plasma HDTV.

We were childishly excited last week to get the chance to go hands on with the Philips VOIP841 - a PC-free combined DECT/Skype phone. Happily, we can report that the phone does seem to do exactly what it says on the tin - in some cases, rather better than we'd have expected and hoped.

It also warms our cockles to witness coloured light boldly spilling out of the TV's left and right sides, cueing us to the presence of Philips' Ambilight system. Designed to make long-term viewing more relaxing by using fluorescent strip lights to produce a pool of light around the TV that can even change colour in sympathy to the content of the image you're watching, we know Ambilight sounds gimmicky. But it's actually backed by hard science, and this reviewer for one loves it. So there.

In case you hadn't noticed, HD DVD vs Blu-ray is not the only vicious format war currently raging within the AV industry. For also currently tearing chunks out of each other are LCD and plasma flat TV technologies. In fact, this screen war has just been kicked up a gear by Hitachi, Pioneer and Panasonic, who've actually joined forces to remind the public of the supposed strengths of plasma over LCD technology via a barrage of in-store materials and an in-depth, pull-no-punches website: www.plasma-lcd-facts.eu.

There's one very important thing that you need to know about the Philips Cineos 37PF9731D - it's the best LCD television that I have ever laid eyes on. Now, I'm not generally in the habit of giving the ending away at the beginning of my reviews, but in the case of this television I couldn't really help myself, it really is that good. OK, now that I've got that out of the way I can get on with the nuts and bolts of the review.

The Philips SRU9600 is a stylish remote that I enjoy seeing on my coffee table. Especially as it replaced all my other remotes and, also very important, my wife is able to use it too. Philips made the setup process really easy and fast. The SRU9600 is a keeper.
