Samsung Says New SUHD TV Is Not Only About Quantum Dots

Samsung Says New SUHD TV Is Not Only About Quantum Dots

Consumer Electronics Jan 8,2015 0

Samsung is trying to convince everyone that the new SUHD TV lineup offers more than the advantages of quantum dots technology, offering a really superior experience to viewers. Samsung says that its new SUHD TV has the highest color purity and light efficiency available today, although the company is obviously referring to the LCD TV models and not the OLED TVs.

The SUHD display is made from Samsung?s nano-crystal semiconductors or Quantum Dots.

With its ability to transmit different colors of light, depending on their size, it can produce the highest color purity and light efficiency available today.

With electricity, it emits light or releases light by absorbing light. Depending on the size of the dot, the wavelengths of the absorbed light vary. For instance, a quantum dot with a size of 2nm absorbs a red light that has a longer wavelength (780nm) and emits blue light, and an 8nm quantum dot absorbs blue light to emit red light.

Since LCD cannot emit light itself, it needs a light source such as the backlight. LCD with LED backlight used RGB colors - Red, Green, and Blue - to produce white. However, recently, LED LCD uses blue LEDs, coated with a yellow phosphor, to create white light.

QD TV is an improved version of this. Instead of using blue LED with yellow phosphor, it uses QD particles to create white. Quantum Dot absorbs blue light and transfers it to red and green to create white color. Through this process, it can produce accurate colors.

On the other hand, OLED (Organic Light-emitting Diode) displays, which have been heavily promoted by Samsung's rival LG Electronics,  is a display comprised of organic compound which emits light in response to an electric current. Each pixel can emit light itself, so it does not have a problem of light from the backlight leaking through the display. Hence, OLED is very different from QD.

The crucial difference between LCD based QD TV and OLED TV is whether or not a TV needs a backlight. While QD TV enhances the backlight of the LCD TV, OLED TV is structured with a TFT substrate and organic diodes without a backlight. As a result, OLED TV is much thinner and lighter than a QD TV.

But Samsung claims that its new SUHD TVs offer even more that a better contrast and brightness that conventional LCD TVs.

They use a new Color technology, offering 64 times more color expression than LCD TVs, as well as twice the level of color adjustment points, and a wider range of more accurate colors.

Besides the color panel, Samsung says that the SUHD TV advanced all aspects of the TV and revolutionized the panel, platform, picture quality engine, and overall algorithm. All these encompass the advantages of LED, PDP, and OLED TV while improving on their flaws, according to Samsung.

The SUHD re-mastering engine utilizes a color grading for the SUHD TV?s 10-bit panel. In addition, Samsung?s SUHD technology can take any sourced content in HD or Full HD then convert it to SUHD quality.
