DVD-R 8x discs dominate DVD-R shipments


First-tier Taiwan manufacturers of optical discs, CMC Magnetics, Ritek and Prodisc Technology, as well as second-tier makers GigaStorage, Lead Data and Optodisc Technology, are shipping 8x DVD-R discs as their mainstream DVD-R product.

Currently, only CMC and Ritek produce 16x DVD-R discs.

Optodisc plans to start shipping 16x DVD-R discs in September, the company indicated. Prodisc, GigaStorage and Lead Data will begin shipping 16x DVD-R discs by the end of this year, according to the companies.
