Sony Ships Stylish New DVD Player

As consumers continue to embrace the DVD format in their homes in record numbers, Sony Electronics is now shipping its first DVD-Video player with cross-generational appeal that may redefine contemporary style with an innovative design.

The new DVD Style Cube(TM) player separates itself from traditional players with its versatile three-way positioning, slim shape and slot-loading disc mechanism. The new player (model DVP-F21) can be operated vertically, horizontally or mounted on a wall. Sleek and compact, the DVD Style Cube player complements virtually any audio/video (A/V) system, whether it's in an ultra-modern living room, a stylish bedroom, a hip dorm room or a high-tech office.

``The Style Cube player's appeal results from its head-turning good looks and its ability to play DVDs in three positions,'' said Tim Baxter, senior vice president of Sony Electronics' Home Entertainment Products Division. ``It is an ideal DVD solution for a broad range of consumer lifestyles.''

The new DVD player features the Precision Drive2(TM) System, a new tilt mechanism providing fast and accurate tracking and playback of DVDs. This system allows viewers to watch their favorite DVDs despite most imperfections or physical flaws on the disk.

Another advantage is the unit's TV Virtual Surround Sound circuitry. Benefiting non-home theater users, this feature optimizes the sound capabilities of standard TV speakers and offers various surround modes. These modes include ``dynamic,'' ``wide,'' ``standard'' and ``night'' (for sound reduction of loud passages during late hours.) The surround sound circuitry also creates a virtual center channel for clearer dialogue reception.

Other features of the Style Cube player include Advanced SmoothScan(TM) Picture Search for seamless transitions between video frames; and Custom Parental Control, which prohibits access to discs with a personalized code, even if the disc does not carry a Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rating. Block Noise Reduction suppresses vertical edge distortions for a smoother, more natural picture. And, the CD-R/CD-RW audio playback capability allows the consumer to play their discs from a CD burner.

To maximize the sound reproduction of the new DVD Style Cube player, an optional matching speaker package (SA-F21), with right and left front speakers and a subwoofer, is now available for less than $200. Offered in two colors, silver or black, the Style Cube player is now available at retailers for about $300.
