An unspecified Japan-based network specialist has beaten out Taiwan-based wireless module makers to supply built-in WLAN modules for Sony?s PlayStation Portable (PSP) consoles.
Asustek Computer, Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) and GemTek Technology had hoped to grab the orders and become Sony?s second supplier of the wireless modules. Foxconn was expected to win the orders, as Sony has already placed orders with the EMS giant to assemble the PSP consoles, the paper added.
Foxconn declined to comment on the report.
CyberTAN Technology is the other wireless module supplier for Sony, with the network equipment specialist landing PSP-use WLAN module orders in November 2004. The company should remain Sony?s chief supplier in the second half, despite Sony?s move to diversify its suppliers, the paper indicated.
CyberTAN declined to comment on the report, citing customer confidentiality.
