KANO Releases BLU-WAV External PDD Optical Drive

Backed by Sony's legendary reliability and ease of use, Kano's Blue-WAV offers the latest in high capacity professional optical storage technology utilizing blue laser technology and Sony's Professional Disc for Data (ProData) format.

The Blue-WAV drive uses a blue-violet laser which has a shorter wavelength and provides higher density storage than DVD or MO. This shorter wavelength, combined with a robust design and advanced optics, results in a high-capacity drive with up to 23GB of online storage capacity and fast 11MB/sec maximum transfer rates. Blue-WAV is an ideal solution for storing and archiving critical data on removable media where random access, high performance, and long data life is essential.

Due to its high capacity and performance, Blue-WAV is ideally suited as archival/backup solutions for professional applications. Some of the core applications include:

  • Telecommunication industry billing archiving/storage
  • E-mail archiving/storage
  • Network storage/server backup
  • Professional audio/video post-production and storage/master archiving/distribution
  • Medical imaging
  • Banking/government

High Performance Reliability

Dustproof Design

Blue-WAV has been designed to be completely airtight; dust is prevented from entering the case via either the mounting screw holes or the space between the top and bottom covers. The main entry point for dust is the shutter, but a dual-shutter mechanism has been adopted to ensure an airtight enclosure even with the media inside the drive. In addition, this drive is maintenance-free: an internal brush mechanism ensures periodic, automatic cleaning of the pickup lens to achieve the highest level of reliability.

Automatic CAV/CLV selection

Blue-WAV? supports both CAV (constant angular velocity) and CLV (constant linear velocity) transfer modes when reading and writing data. The Blue-WAV? drive's innovative automatic CAV/CLV read/write mode selection ensures small files are accessed quickly using CAV (constant angular velocity), while large files are transferred using CLV (constant linear velocity) for faster transfers. In CAV mode the disc rotates at a constant speed, meaning that the transfer rate slows as the pickup approaches the center of the disc, but seek operations are fast (110ms average). In CLV mode the speed of the pickup is constant, so although seek operations take longer, the maximum transfer rate of 11MB/s is maintained at all times. Blue-WAV automatically selects the ideal mode to ensure the best overall performance. These modes can also be manually set by the user.

High-capacity cache

The Blue-WAV drive is equipped with a 16MB cache, much larger than the 2MB cache of DVD-RW drives or even the 8MB cache of MO drives. This effectively reduces the load on the CPU when writing to disc, and improves performance when accessing data thanks to its enhanced capacity to read ahead. Error recovery is also improved: the large cache minimizes any impact on performance.

Low power consumption

When there is no disc access for a certain length of time, the Blue-WAV drive starts shutting down components and circuits to save power. Power consumption is cut by approximately 50%. In fan-off mode the drive produces less heat and attracts less dust since there are no moving parts. The low power consumption mode can be adjusted using mode select commands to tailor performance for different applications.

Next Generation Storage Media

For over twenty years Sony has defined the leading edge in optical storage technology. Sony's ProData media cartridge represents the next step in the evolution of optical disc storage. ProData media cartridge offers next-generation performance: a recording capacity of 23GB and a maximum transfer rate of 11MB /s max. Performance is set to double with each new generation of ProData media cartridges. So whatever the criteria-capacity, speed, or reliability, ProData represents the best solution for professional archiving and backup requirements

Designed to Protect Misssion Critical Data

ProData media is encased in an anti-static propylene resin housing with a revolving shutter mechanism to prevent the entry of dust. As a result, ProData offers a data integrity rating of more than 50 years.

Re-writable/Write-once

Two types of single-sided media are available, rewritable and write-once, both offering 23GB of storage capacity. Rewritable media allows data to be rewritten and overwritten repeatedly. Write-once media cannot be reformatted and does not allow data to be overwritten, making it ideal for long-term archiving; as long as there is space available, data can always be added but never altered or deleted.

Quick/Easy Back-up & Recovery

For protection and complete recovery of your data, the Blue-WAV? drives include industry leading Dantz Retrospect Express backup and disaster recovery software for Mac and Windows. Retrospect backs up important data, all operating system files and settings, and device drivers, as well as applications and their settings for the local computer.

The EasyScript? Wizard guides you through the steps required to set up the automatic, scheduled backups of your computer. And when you need to perform a restore, Retrospect locates files quickly - even if you're not sure where or when you saved them. Retrospect's patented Progressive Backup saves time because it backs up only new and changed files after the first full backup. Retrospect performs 100% accurate restores without bringing back unwanted files and folders that were previously deleted, renamed, or moved.
