Same situation for all Plextor DVD units. Plextor must enable this via firmware, and it is encouraged to perhaps also improve +RW compatibility in some cases.

Searching something on Page 10 of this thread I came accross your post dated from january the 15th where you said that your PX-716A is reading bt not writing at all
So it reminded me about 2 threads I saw recently about motherboard compatibilty with recent Plextor and Pioneer drives

I had already 3 people on my forum in France who solved their problem with these links ...
I am not very experienced with these hardware problems, but I undestood that people solved the problem simply by forcing UDMA 2 instead of 3 or 4 through a setting in Windows
So it not really a problem with the Plextor PX-716A itself: it is just because the drive forces UDMA 4 at installation and the motherboard cannot adapt or something like that ...

Maybe your problem is already solved. If not I wish you good luck.

Does that mean, as long as you have an INTEL Chipset m.board you are ok with PX-716A using UDMA 4???

Also another question, since I don't know much about the matter....

Will everything work as it should if you have PX-716A as primary Master using UDMA 4 and on the same IDE Cable
have a DVD-Rom (reader) Primary Slave using UDMA 2???

I just noticed that people answred in these links tell that everything is working on their ASUS motherboard with Intel chipsets.

I've been looking at the links that you posted... Thanks by the way for them! ;)
Reading the threads there I got the impression that this is a problem for people with mother boards that aren't Intel
Chipsets, so being sure of it I decided to ask...

hopefully someone in this forum knows something about it...
Otherwise I will probably ask it on the other site... :)

@ enzo78, you are free to ask to any forum you like too, unfortunaly we mostly test the drives with Intel based motherboards, so we didn't had any problem with the PX-716A...

im looking into getting this drive, but the lowest price ive seen it for is about $119 on eBay. i was wondering, is the 8MB buffer really that helpful, and enough of a reason to get this? thanks

edit: burning 900MB to a CD-R is pretty cool too

No, a 2mb buffer is fine. I do have a Plextor now, but got it for the booktype feature. Don't get me wrong, I love the drive... it is pricey. Probably would have been happy with the BenQ too, but I am kinda glad I opted for the Plextor. Always loved their drives... Used 'em way back when I was Mr. SCSI. If you can afford it, you won't be disappointed... If not get the cheaper BenQ DW1620A...

Either way you should be happy.
