Get a copy of the new 'ct magazine ... there is a 16x DVD ReWriter and media roundup ... they wrote that Plextools' TA is not more than a joke due to its unreliable behaviour and inaccurate reporting.

Can I buy this 'ct magazine in France or Germany ?
Are articles from this magazine sometimes put on line ?

'ct is a german magazine ... look for 02/2005 ... it has been released yesterday

@ Cal 02

I think all the diferencies are visible when reading both reviews, don't you think? Do you have something specific on mind?

For example as a reader 716 is faster in almost all tasks in comparison wih the 712 while it has better CD error correction. The DVD error correction depends on the defect type, so 716 is better somewhere while 712 with other. And also the recording part is different for the two drives. The DVD writng speeds are higher.

I'm most interested in the Reading, Writing, and dependability quality between both PX-712A drive and the PX-716A, not so BIG on the speed, well perhaps a little.

Also, I'm patiently waiting to see the "Review" of the Pioneer DVR-A09!

Yeah, me too. However 716 it is ok for me. I just like it. Only the price is high and I don't know if it is worthy at this time to invest on a second burner.

Yes I also waiting for the A09 to test.

Plextor 716 is very good. Imagine that all the issues it has can be easily solved with just a firmware upgrade, apart from the price. The writing quality is very good with almost all tested media.

And its ripping speed for movies is higher even from many DVD-ROMs.

Thanks Minos, I really appreciate your comments, I really do! But I wonder if Plextor would do the same thing Pioneer did by putting out the Pioneer DVR-108 and then DVR-A08XLA?

I can tell you off hand right now the following have been fixed:-

  • Doesn't support BookType setting for DVD+R/RW media (was the most important fix, imo)
  • Retail package doesn't include any DVD recordable/re-writable media (at least where I live..)

    minos,

have you tested cdr writing quality @ slower speed? when 107d was reviewed, i remember seeing different jitter values over different writing speed. it seems like 716a cd writing quality is less than accetable @ 48x

    where did cd mtr go?

thanks all people who commented our PX-716A review, at always we tried to post our test results, from my point of view, the PX-716A seems a decent drive, of course needs improvements, since BenQ DW1620A and NEC3500/3520A drives have raised the bar high enough at terms or writing quality...

    >Maybe you should be more specific and write that EAC DAE Quality does not support C2 retrieval from the PX-716A ... the PX-712A's C2 error reporting wasn't supported either up to the recent EAC version.

You are correct, Minos should fix this at the review

    >and tell what's the difference ...

I would try to burn DL images with CopyToDVD, i know 100% that has got certification from Philips for good DL burns (remember we have been using CopyToDVD from scratch, when many people had problems with Nero). Maybe DVD Decrypter needs some further tuning with the specific model, i would also try to burn a second disc before jumping at conclusion, of course the firmware is still beta and final 1.04 would perform much better...

    > I just try to find out if this new TA test is reliable or not. they wrote that Plextools' TA is not more than a joke due to its unreliable behaviour and inaccurate reporting.

As far i saw, each Plextools TA "Scan" lasts around 16~20secs...Since you cannot really set nothing, i assume it takes a random number of samples (maybe not random, pre-defined) and measures them...I still feel a NeroCDSpeed scan shows more and a scan with the drive at terms of PI/PIF error rates will continued at our reviews..

    emperor or Minos

Is there a difference between the BenQ DW1620A and the BenQ DW1620?! And if there is, what is it?

I can't understand why Plextor website can't give the "immediate" rebate price reduction if a person purchases the drive from Plextor's website??? When someone purchases a drive from Plextor's website Plextor has ALL of the information it needs from the purchaser to give them the rebate at purchase. I wonder why Plextor doesn't do this???

Thanks Minos, I was just venting my frustration concerning Plextor's Marketing Practices I guess!

I am hoping i can get some help from you experienced Plextor users

Up to now i ahve always used Pioneer, NEC, lite On Drives and always had no problems, cheap but decent

Anyway as i just made a HCPC i needed a small drive so as the plextor was on 170mm i bought one

Now i have installed it on my Nforce 4 Motherboard and it will not write ATALL

It will read dvds and cds fine, rip them, to hard drive no problems

When i write Either DATA, ISO IMAGE or anything else it goes through the write no problems says successful and the disk has been written to BUT when i try to read back its shown as empty, if i put in DVD player (EG a DVD movie) it says cannot play disk

I have used NERO, DVD Decrypter and Plextors Tools all the same

So i thought maybe something wrong with Nforce 4 IDE so i put my old Pioneer 107 as the slave drive and what you know writes everything perfect every time

So what am i doing wrong i have never bought a writer and had these problems before, i thought i was buying a top quality drive as well

Oh yeh the media i am using is Datawrite FUJI Dye and Verbatim MCC Dye for DVD-R and Traxdata CD-R

    so not cheap media

    Thanks in advance
