I went from the original NEC 2.16 to Mad Dog 2.F8 (from The DangerousBrothers - for RPC1 & Riplock) as I wanted to use a Ritek DL disk, these are the cheapest here in the UK @ 5GBP / Verbatim is 7.50GBP. It worked fine with my drive.

I have now moved to the TDK 2.C8 SE as it has the latest writing strategies (see sticky on the differences between the versions) and it does Ritek DL at 4x.

@emperor

Hmm.. I see The Dangerous Brothers relased a modified firmware of the same version as of 10/7/2004..
Appears to be identical in description except for the Ritek DL support.. Can you confirm if this is unique the this SE version you posted?

I checked with Roxio Easy media creator 7 - it shows the same speeds without a disk in the drive (x1-x6) . What software are you using?

its not identical since the SE supports Ritek DL at 4X, while the dangerous brother release doesn't

I have the same problem. I checked again with an 8x DVD+R and it shows me the correct speeds an write at this speeds ( tested with nero 6.6, CopytoDVD and Roxio WinOnCD), so I think the software is only the problem.

Thank you for the reply... Discovered this a day or two later after asking anyway.

emperor,
I'm using the 2C8 and it seems to be the fasting ripping for me (at about 7x max). Herrie's I believe did not have riplock removed so I can only do it at 1.9x or so.
I'm wondering why did the TDK 2C8SE have the rip speed completely removed intead of limiting at 7x ripping? I believe the NEC can read a lot faster.

2C8SE is excelent with my NEC-3500. Fast ripping and cheap media (Ricohjpn R02) is supported 12x instead of 8x with v2.16 (not sure if I should really try this one with 12x...)

I have got only one problem:
I tried to erase a DVD-RW disk (OPTODISC W002) previously burned with v2.16 and get the error "Invalid disk" in NERO. (There is no problem with OPTODISC_OP4 DVD+RW)

Is it possible that due to different writing-strategies I can only erase a -RW-disk with the same firmware which I used when writing the disk - or is there a problem with 2C8SE and -RW ?

The NEC/TDK drives will rip up to 4X with DL media, this improved up to 7X, you cannot go higher with DL media, its the max reading speed from specs

Do you mean it should read DL media at 7x Max? Or normal DVD-ROM Dual Layer?
Because mine still reads from 2x to 4x while reading DVD+DL media (takes 31 minutes to read a 7.86G disc).

Regards,

FJorgeR.

PS: I'm lucky because I'm using a Toshiba SD-M1712 with rip lock firmware ;) , I can read DVD+DL media from 4x to 10x (AVG 7.44x, takes only 14 minutes to read the same 7.86G disc), that's really something.

Emperor,

Is this the limitation of the NEC3500A or is it the limitation of dvd burn drive in general?
