WOW!!!

I go out and purchase the 4166B and get home and find firmware 1.02 online...What timing.

Two initial burns with Verbatim 16X + and - R disks...

-R  5:41 total burn time.  Read with Benq 1640 and the score is 98

+R  5:44 total burn time.  Read with Benq 1640 and the score is 97

That is better to begin with than either my Plextor 716A or Benq...

This drive is GREAT!

Now I am gonna play with Lightscribe...

There are official 2166 and 4164 1.01 firmware too. Why not 1.02, who knows ?



They are posted on the LGE site ItalianJob.  I emailed them last night and asked them to post them on LG's main site.... ENJOY!

Only one issue with the drive at this point.  Went to LG USA to register the drive...can't register...says that the GSA-4166B is not a valid model????

Huh???

I clicked on registration from the 4166B page...is LG that behind?

Surprisingly no new MediaCodes have been added - still 329 in total.
But I guess its still worth an update (recording quality).
Last but not least take a guess what date the 1.02 firmware is from ?

Yeah, the 1.02 is known to be quite the same as the 1.01 "rev B" from MP3Mogul.
Same creation date, etc.

I have only had the drive since this afternoon...but did notice something.  When I check burn speed on Verbatim 2.4X DVD-R DL...it says 6X.  Mp3mogul said that this drive did NOT overspeed....it does now...

Verbatim DVD+R 16X (MCC004) printable in case, made in Taiwan.
Firmware 1.02 -Burned @ 16X in 5min57s with Nero Burning ROM 6.6.1.4

My bad...6X applies to DVD+R DL...sorry!  All in all...I have never owned a burner that does such a clean job of burning.  My Plex PX-716A probably got closest...but most times...at 12X...the burn would flatten out...Plextor never reached 16X very often.

    Yeah I had that problem as well.  You can EMAIL the webmaster or call the number to register the drive manually, as it's not on their website to register yet.

1.02 added some overspeed for some quality media, although the codes are the same, the overspeed is not!  If I am correct it's on DL media and just a few +R media.

MCSE 1.0.8.3 shows no differences between firmware 1.01 (2005/11/14) and 1.02 (2005/11/14).

FYI, you can open the exe firmware with WinRAR to get a .bin firmware.

If you are curious, you will look at the .ini file and find new LG models...

It shows no difference in "MEDIA CODES" that's because there were no new media codes added, some were changed, but no new ones.  However:  The writing quality has been improved on certain DVD +R Media and DVD +R DL media.

No difference in mediacodes and speed supported. There's no new overspeed if I believe MCSE

Internals may have change, yes, MCSE was not created to say it.

Yes, and the DVD+RW 8X problem with RicohJPN W21 seems solved with 1.02 firmware : I manage to burn Philips DVD+RW 8X at rated speed with good results now.
