It was reported on a french forum, maybe the localization is important ?

I will try myself this evening...

The LG auto-update utility gives an error 7 under Windows XP SP2 Fr and gives "no updates available" under Windows 2000 last SP (Fr) with my configuration. No luck...

The french user who said he has received 1.02 firmware through LG auto-update software ("GSA-4166B.exe"  file) is not connected since 3 days and does not answer to my PM. No luck again.

You can use the LG auto update software under XP, when you set fwupdate.exe in Windows98 compatibility mode. But no update avaible here either for the 4166b.

I already try that with no success. I will try the LG auto-update software on my old P3 1GHz...

I've checked "every" language site LG has, it's not posted anywhere they have!

My contact still has no results yet, the person is still out of town, we will have it as soon as he returns.  The guy out of town is the hardware engineer that designs the firmware, so it will be straight from the factory.  Sorry we must continue to wait, but things happen sometimes.

Also, they have fixed the "autoupdate" problem, I don't get errors when I run it anymore...

bomitch -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/6/2006 6:03:47 PM)

Mogul....

I hope you don't mind...I just wanted to ask...is this drive really worth a try?  I am very disappointed in my Benq DW1640...it is OK with Dual layer...but very sporatic with 16X media...and I see glowing reports with the LG on 16X media.  Also...I have a lot of 2.4X Dual Layer Verbatim media left...what is the burn speed?

Thanks

Bob

MP3Mogul -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/6/2006 6:32:34 PM)

This drive is fantastic.  It does "not" overspeed media, it only writes at the media certified speed.  But it writes in "quality" I have a BenQ as well, and it doesn't have the writing quality that this drive with firmware 1.01 does.  I highly recommend this drive.

bomitch -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/7/2006 12:50:03 PM)

One final question before I take the plunge.  DVD-RAM!  I have Panasonic drivers that work with the DVD-RAM drive in my laptop...I HATE them!  Eat resources, etc.  Is there a way to use DVD-RAM without installing drivers?  I wonder if WinXP SP2 will let me naturally format FAT 32 on a disk?  Can you shed some light?

Thanks

Bob

On my laptop I use InCD...but I can't on my desktop due to conflicts that Nero InCD 5x has caused with Sonic MyDVD and it's ability to burn.  If InCD is installed on my desktop, I can't burn to DVD using Sonic.  If I uninstall InCD...Sonic burns fine...and I do a lot of conversion of home movies to DVD via my ATI AIW and Sonic...

MP3Mogul -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/7/2006 1:25:06 PM)

The LG drive uses the HP drivers, they are not resource hungry, you won't even notice them running!

bomitch -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/7/2006 2:17:29 PM)

Do they come with the drive?  Or do you have to download?

Thanks

MP3Mogul -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/7/2006 3:34:28 PM)

They came with the retail version.

Hey first of all thanks MP3Mogul for getting us the 1.01 firmware and I agree this drive has been great for me so far especially with the 1.01 fw!!

I do have a couple questions..

What will be different in the 1.02 firmware?? Did your "inside guy" give you any clues??

Secondly, has anyone used any DVD+R DL media with this drive yet?? I have burned some Memorex DL discs(Ritek D01 and yes I know its not the best brand but it was all I could find at the time:) and they have been burning at 4x when they only show a rating of 2.4x on the disc itself!! Am I not reading something correctly or what??? Im not complaining or anything but just curious. :P  This drive burned the DL disc full in a little less than ~20 mins and it worked perfectly in my stand alone dvd player.

MP3Mogul -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/7/2006 6:21:16 PM)

Yes, as far as I know "all" 2.4x will burn at 4x that have been on the market for a while.

The 1.02 promises added media support, and increased writing quality on both DVD+R and DVD+R DL.

Bronan -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/7/2006 9:03:26 PM)

Well i am not so pleased with this drive
I have bought several types of dvd+r discs but on all it has been slow as hell
Non of the discs i have bought (so called 16X media) has burned faster then 8X
My recent purchase Philips 1-16X media code ( RITEK- R05-001) is even worse non of the discs gets burned with higher speed then 4X

Tried any Verbatim 16x?  I'm not surprised the Ritek media is limited to 4x; that's a fairly new media code and I doubt very many burners have proper support for them in their current firmwares.

detritus -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/8/2006 12:09:59 PM)

I've used Verbatim 16x DVD+R Printables (MCC 004) successfully, apart from a couple of issues with what appeared to be a faulty drive.

This was with firmware 1.02 btw (and 1.01 on my previous drive).

ItalianJob -> RE: LG GSA-4166b Firmware 1.02 (2/8/2006 2:25:54 PM)

The LG 4166 1.02 firmware was posted on the cdrlabs site and then officialy release by LG on the us site :
http://us.lgservice.com/

There are official 2166 and 4164 1.01 firmware too. Why not 1.02, who knows ?
