I just want to know if the Plextor is worth buying. 8-}

I bought the Plextor. It has worked flawlessly so far. I sent some specs out to members in this thread and they thought they were great. If you are a Plextor fan just buy it. I also like the Pioneer drives. I don't think you can go wrong with either type. I never bought an NEC so I can't speculate on them. If you have'nt made up your mind and you're not impatient, wait for the full review.

I have OWNED nothing but Plextor drives, but I do want to wait for the FULL review (And not just from CDRinfo) of the PX-716A before purchasing as I always do.

Greetings everyone, as this is my first posting!

I am considering buying the 716, but have reservations concerning the min. hw requirements.
It says P4/1.4 GHz if I am not mistaken, but my system is a PIII/1GHz/512MB. Would that work?

I bet on the drive's large buffer (8MB), in comparison to NEC 3500 and 3520's only 2MB. (Bear in
mind that 716 costs nearly twice as much as the 3500 here in Greece, but this is not an issue
for me - if that means solid error-free performance that is!)

franz99, probably that Plextor will support DVD-R DL with a firmware upgrade at the near future

Emperor you are right: it is about support for DVD-R DL.

The JPEG is 74 Ko , too large to upload ...

yes i saw, updated the above thread, as it seems some functions are lost when using that specific firmware, what's the point of Plextor releasing such firmware, since there aren't any DVD-R DL media sold at the market? Just to impress users?

I aggree this release is not really usefull ...
On the japanese site they say that the release of the official firmware supporting DVD-R DL will be mid January 2005

On top of that I know yhat we should perhaps not "transport" this new firmwares from Plextor's Japan to Europe and the US (where there are even TLA#00 and TLA#01" hardwares around)

I am far more interested in the new TA (time analyser) test in Plextools and other tests.
I take the opportunity I have your attention at the moment to ask you to have a look about what "Beeder" is telling about "AUTOSTRAREGY" in this thread. It is a bit amazing !

I think they may want to show it can be done so people will buy the drive with that feature able to be added later on.

Hi,
I just got the px-716a and so far I'm having a bit of trouble...
originally i had a NEC 2500a and it was great up until it 2 weeks ago, so I bought this 716... anyhow with the NEC I used RITEKG05 8x media and all the successful burns was readable, by this I mean you can open up the folder in windows explorer and you can stick it a normal DVD-Rom and it would work. With the PX I would burn fine at 8x and Nero would say "burn proccess was successful @ 8x...", but the disc would be unreadable. Any suggestions? is the media just incompatible?
