I don't understand why Manufactures put out drives that can't achieve the "Specs" that are indicated for them..... Seems like "False" advertising. If a Manufacturer says, their drive can burn a DVD + RW (Recommended Media) disc at 8x then the drive should be able to do this out-of-the box! But we all know this is not the case.

Why should a Manufacturer get paid top dollar for a product that won't perform like it says out-of-box? And the end-user have to WAIT months later to get a "Firmware" update that may or may not work properly. The end-user is getting cheated to say the very least, because they're paying for something that they are not getting.

I wonder what would happen if users would STOP buying such products from those drive manufactures that do this?

First of all, there aren't at the moment 8X +RW media, so its natural that plextor and other manufactures wait until 8X +RW media hits the market...

Yeah, but Emperor you know that's not the only situation that happens. Also, in order for them to say the drive can write at certain speeds it means that THEY have the media to test with, right? Furthermore, I've known some drives that can use a slower speed media and obtain a higher speed burn!

I believe no manufacture should wait until certain speed media hit the market before they put out firmware to write at that speed, like I said before everything should be in there when purchased, just like the "Rygue" it's ALL In There!

There is no overspeeding of RW media, period. And it's possible they have tested the drive with preproduction samples of 8x +RW. 6x DVD-RW is already out in Japan.

I wasn't talking about RW media, in fact I didn't even mention it--- did you READ my last post! And it doesn't matter whether it's Reproduction Samples or not it's still used and if they can use it so can others if it's made available.

Also, obviously it doesn't matter to you whether you get what you pay for, I do!

What are you complaining about this drive not being able to do "out of the box" if not 8x DVD+RW burning? The PX-716A can already overspeed some 8x DVD+R and -R media to 12x and 16x, and DVD+R DL 2.4x media to 4x. The drive is doing what it clams in terms of speed, the problem is the write quality is poor, which may or may not be correctable via firmware.

Your problem is that YOU DON'T READ! I'm not just talking about Plextor I'm talking about ALL manufacturers of these Optical drives. And if you've been purchasing and using any of them then you should be aware of what I'm saying! Most of these Optical drives DO NOT perform out of the box as they should, therefore, "Firmware"!

Also, I'm not complaining I'm just stating a FACT!




Tip: I've owned nothing but Plextor drives, (And I might add they have given me "Great" customer service too!) so I don't have anything personally against Plextor!

The US site of Plextor has only (today saturday the 18 th at 17:30 GMT) the version 1.02 on line, see here:

If you want to know the whole story: PX-716A with TLA#0203 are already sold in Japan and the new firmware 1.03 was first put on line at the chinese website Friday december the 16th at 16:27:01 (local time there I suppose: this date is written on their website)

We will have soon 8X +RW and 6X -RW media and will test if the burner is compatible with them, NEC also will support DVD-R DL with firmware update near March 2005 when the specs are finalized
