I'm not sure, their website shows that it is.... perhaps you just haven't found the right retail outlet yet??? I don't know the answer.

Hello, I'm a noob to all this...long story short I need to know if this drive is capable of burning copyright protected dvds? (and with what software)  I just bought the drive and can't get it to sucessfully burn anything i.e. dvd's cd's.  I downloaded any dvd 5.6.1.1 and it still won't  let me copy any copyright protected dvds.  Can anyone just tell me if they copy dvd's with this burner before its too late for me to return it.  All I want to be able to do is rent dvd's from netflix and copy them. Thanks in advance.

Yes you can backup your DVD's with this drive, I have done many with it, and CD's as well.  You'll need a combination of programs, such as AnyDVD, DVDShrink and Nero.

Ok... thanks I downloaded anydvd but still have problems with copyright protected dvd's I have heard of dvdshrink I will download that now.

When I insert a dvd before anything opens the drive reads the disc and automatically pops-up with an error from anydvd readnig:
Warning
Failure to read DVD
This could have several reasons:
1- DVD media is dirty. try to clean it - NO
2-DVD media is damaged you need to replace it. - NO
3-Your drive is a region locked rpc2 drive, which does not allow reading of scrambled sectors from a different region and you try to read a DVD from a different region.
Known drives having this problem are RICHO/PHILIPS DVD writere and Matshita/Panasonic DVD readers and writers. You can try to find a RPC1 pathced firmware @ http://www.rpc1.com - which is why I asked the previous post.
4- Your drive is an RPC2 drive that has not yet been assigned a Region.  Try to assign one, or try to find a RPC1 patched firmware @ http://www.rpc1.com -??????help!!!!!

1- Install the LG 4166 1.01 firmware : http://members.aol.com/mp3mogul/4166B.zip

2- Update Nero to the last available version : 6.6.0.18 or 7.0.1.4b

Got 1.01 firmware does the updated Nero really make a difference?  I'm trying to use shrinkdvd to copy it to my hard drive?

1/ Which 1.01 ?

1.01 dated from 11/14 : good one, the one MP3Mogul posted in a zip file.
1.01 dated from 10/18 : wrong one, you must update in order to read some original DVD

Look with Nero Infotool for the current 1.01 date.

B/ Nero 6.6 or 7 without patches are very buggy, so the update is strongly recommended.

Taking into account that we are already on page eight - I wonder why there aren't more user reports @ videohelp (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=1240).

Especially the media experiences are pretty thin atm e.g. I would really want to know if there are any differences between Lightscribe media (comparing the top surface of course ).

Hello,

I have a Problem with my LG 4166B DVD.
It was shipped with Firmware 1.00. A week ago i've flashed the new 1.01 Firmware - no problems in that process.

Now today I've tried to burn a DVD-RAM (Panasonic 2~3x), but my drive wasn't even able to read the disc. This DVD-RAM was burned (UDF 2.0) two months ago with the same drive, but still with firmware 1.00. My Toshiba SD-M1612 DVD-ROM has no problems reading this disc. My only other DVD-RAM (same type) isn't working either.
I also noticed that the LG 4166B has now some problems reading DVD+R that was burned with it (UID: [DVD+R:DAXON-AZ2-000]; Disc & Book Type: [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]). Sometimes I needed 3 or 4 tries, untill the drive has accepted the discs.
I've still to test burning with the new firmware, but I'm already worried about the reading problems.

Is it possible that the firmware change has something to do with this issues? Can I downgrade to 1.00, just to test if there is a real hardware problem?

Yes you can downgrade to 1.00.  Did you get the 1.01 firmware that I posted?  I haven't had problems with that one, but yes, you can downgrade.

I've used the firmware 1.01 posted in this thread. But where can I get the old 1.00?

Besides: Burning seems ok. I just burned a DVD+R (same type as mentioned) without problems. After finishing, the drive wasn't able to read the disc. Second try (disc out and in): no problem.

Thank you for the old firmware.
I just downgraded to it, but this wasnt the problem. Same reading behaviour as with 1.01. So  I will return the drive to my dealer this week.

Yes, this is usually a "media" problem, and not the drive.... I have been running 1.01 firmware for quite some time without any problems, and many people here have.
