Well I have an update as far as my write attempts, I've managed to get it to burn on the Verbatim disks, but only at 16x. 12, 8, and 4x don't work, won't even burn the lead in. Also the finalize disk box can't be checked. Though the burn @ 16x seems to read fine w/o any read errors that I can tell. Still confused as to why it won't do 12/8/4x and fails with that box checked.

Another question, if I download and install the newer adaptec ASPI layer, how do I get Nero to use it? I wouldn't mind trying that out to see if it changes anything.

That wouldn't change it.  ASPI doesn't have anything to do with the writespeed boxes, this is by firmware installed in your drive.  Do you have the 1.01 firmware that I have posted?  Which firmware is on your drive?

I have the one you posted, and it flashed fine. I do have the options for the slower speeds, they just don't burn correctly, the burn process fails during the lead in process. Which is what I am confused about, lol shouldn't the burning failures occur at the higher speeds vs. the slower ones? This is why I am confused, also why it fails when you have the finalize disk box checked.

Ok, I've got to ask:  Why is the Adaptec ASPI 4.60 necessary when Nero uses it's own built-in ASPI layer?  Wouldn't it be for other apps that just use what the "System ASPI" is?

Also does anyone know if PlexTools Pro installs a copy of Adaptec ASPI?  I usually only have ASPI 4.71.2 installed (i.e. "corrupted" WinXP install)...then after updating to the latest PlexTools Pro, I saw a mix of the 4.71.2 and 4.60 installed (kind of like a Win2000 install).  I guess if you already have fully installed ASPI 4.60, then it doesn't bother installing...

Yes, Nero uses it's own ASPI.

WinXP has had problems with 4.7 version of ASPI, and most people agree that 4.60 is the most stable.  I have a simple file that you can download, (READ AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS) and it will cure all ASPI problems!

    I'm not sure why you're having problems at slower speeds, I rarely burn above 8x, usually only on a data disc, and then no higher than 12x, and I verify the entire disc afterwards.  I now have 3 4166b's and they all write with the highest quality, and especially at slower speeds (4x, 8x).  I'm thinking perhaps you have a drive problem.  I would purchase just a piece or 2 (perhaps a 5 pack) of another media and just make sure you don't have a bad batch of media (I have seen this before).

Ok, well I had 3 successes with ther Verbatim media last night, but only at 16x, I did a surface scan on them and there weren't any bad sectors. I would do a disk quality scan if it would let me, perhaps I don't know how to use it, but I've always seen that box grayed out. I just tried burning the same Verbatim disk at 8x and it tossed the same error at me, I'll attach the nero log file so you can check it out. Also at 16x it works with the finalize disk box checked, its as if the drive only wants to do 16x.

Ah, you are using -R media, this is why, it has not been released in the firmware yet.

If you use +R you can select 4,8,12 or 16x.....

I understand that your issue will be "fixed" in firmware 1.02.... though don't quote me on that!

I recently installed a GSA-4166B, it came with firmware 1.02.  On the whole I'm pretty happy with the performance, but I thought I'd share a (minor?) issue I seem to be experiencing.

I'm using Nero 6.6.0.16 to burn Verbatim DVD+R 16x Printables (MCC 004, according to Nero InfoTool), I don't have any other media handy at the moment.

When I burn a full disc at 16x the drive seems to hang up at the writing lead out stage.It will spin up and down continuously, every 20-30 seconds.  If I leave it alone, it finishes after about  5 to 10 minutes, and the disc verifies with no errors.

A full disc burned at 8x completes normally, as does a non full disc (+/- 4gb) burned at 16x.

Does anyone have any ideas what the 'problem' may be?   Hardware? Firmware?

Why not update your nero, the latest would be 6.6.0.18, or even Nero 7.

I don't think its a software thing.  I used dvd decrypter to create an image, and then burn that same image, and I get the same result.  It spends a long time (anything from 4 to 15 minutes) "Finalising disc...", but it eventually finishes and the disc is complete and usable.
The odd thing is that this only happens if I burn at 16x and if the disc is full (at most a couple of Mb short).

I was thinking of flashing the 1.01 firmware to see if it affects anything.   Is it possible to save my current firmware first?

Yes flash the drive (UPDATE NERO ALSO!!!!), if you don't like the firmware 1.01 I have the original as well.

Well I flashed to down to 1.01 and tried Nero 7.0.1.4b, but no change. I'm tempted to return the drive and swap it for another.

I attached a partial log below.  What is interesting to me is the time between the last two log messages. This is where the drive just spins up and down. If I don't let the burn complete at this point the disc is unusable.

Does anyone know where this drive is available in Canada?
I have a BenQ 1640 and NEC 3500 and thay are excellent drives but this LG is very tempting with the lightscribe feature.

An update, I swapped my drive for another GSA-4166B, and after burning a full data disc, and running a Create Data Disc test in Nero CD-DVD Speed, it seems like my first drive must have had some sort of problem. Both writes completed in what appeared to be normal times, with none of the repeated spinning up/down I experienced previously.

The new drive is otherwise identical, stamped December 2005 and loaded with firmware 1.02.
