Get AnyDVD...... it will remove that for you in the background, while not affecting your drive.  There are actually quite a few programs that will do this for you...

    I downloaded MCSE 1.0.8.0....  I wish it would allow you to change "write Speeds" without changing the media identifier... I don't like that part, because it then delets that media code from the list....  Perhaps down the line as he has worked on it for a while, we'll be able to just go in, select a specific media, and change the write speed, they are all greyed out right now.... The CodeGuys have done this for LiteOn... I'd love to see this for LG.

This is only a "first" support after alpha tests. I notice the speed table only report max speed (for exemple DVD+RW 8X RicohJPNW21 are reported to burn only at 8X, but it's 4X-8X in reality). The DL speed table is not complete too : MKM001 can be written @ 2.4X-4X and 6X.
I mail Ala42 about this two problems and I think he will correct them, at least for the DL table he has the solution.

MP3Mogul, are you still sure the 4164 is different from the 4166 watching at the bootcode rev. ?
It remembers me the BenQ 1600@1620 Pro bootcode rev...

No, beige, but it's not a matter of color.
By the way, did you use 1.01 firmware from MP3Mogul ? Some older revision of 1.01 firmware has issue reading original Video DVD.

    It could be, but my source at the factory says the hardware is "Different".... but doesn't seem so when it's in some of the 2166 external cases does it?

Hey folks, been reading through this site and decided I would post my problem regarding the 4166B.

So far with this drive, I've had maybe a 2% success rate, and even those few aren't oustanding there are a few damaged areas when using Nero's surface scan.

I've used a few different medias, Memorex DVD-Rs, HP DVD+Rs, Staples DVD+Rs, and most recently Verbatim DVD-Rs, so far only the HP DVD+Rs have come out as a success the rest are in the trash.

Here are the Manufacturer IDs for the media:
HP & Memorex: CMC MAG. AE1
Staples : OPTODISCR004
Verbatim: MCC 03RG20 (which I've read is decent quality)

The drive itself is on its own ATA channel with UDMA enabled, all of my harddrives are SATA so the DVD-ROM and writer get their own PATA controllers to themselves.

Most often I get the no seek complete error, with the occaisonal write error, this is with Nero 7 Ultra Edition, not the software the drive came with. I have also tried all the write speeds, and the only success I've had so far was with an 8x speed, it managed to complete a write @ 16x with the verbatim but the disc was unreadable.

My hardware specs:

AMD Athlon 64-bit 3200+
Windows XP Professional 64-bit edition (I am somewhat worried that this may be the problem)
1GB DDR @ 400MHz
Nvidia nForce 3 250
I can give more detailed specs if needed.
The drive is also sporting the 1.01 firmware dated: 11/14/05, and as of yet, I've had no successful writes with the newer firmware, the the 1.00 wasn't that much better.

Let me know if you folks have any other ideas, I am fairly thoroughly stumped, did a fresh install of windows to make sure it wasn't something else messing up Nero.

PS: Drive writes CDs flawlessly, and it can read anything i toss in there, just doesn't want to write DVDs, all I want to do is backup data.

Try the verbatim +R media.  It's a matter of media.  Almost all the media you posted above was rubbish.....

You should try to :

1- update to Nero 7.0.1.4b
2- uninstall virtual drives (installed by cloneCD/DVD, etc.)
3- update your NForce IDE drivers (and re-check DMA mode 4 should be ok)
4- if it doesn't work, uninstall the Nforce IDE drivers and test with Microsoft drivers (and re-check DMA mode 4)
5- change your IDE cable (=> 80 pins for DMA mode 4)
6- let the 4166 alone in master position (that mean with no slave) for a test. There are some weird hardware problem between IDE drives sometimes.

Hehe, well I'll try yet another form of media, hehe so far I have about 150 blank discs that all appear to be useless. As far as what Italian suggested, I've already done most of that, thanks for the suggestions though. The 4166 is the primary master, and my other drive is the secondary master, all sporting brand new 80wire cables, even tried changing out the old 80 wires for new ones. The version of Nero I am using is the newest one posted on Ahead's site, fresh clean installation. And no virtual drives running either, about the only thing I haven't tried is using window's IDE controller, although when I installed the Nvidia drivers, it let me know that Windows already came with newer drivers (the Nvidia drivers are still from '04 for my version of Windows).

So I suppose I can go out and try the Verbatim +Rs, hehe I think I've spent more money on the media for this drive than I did on the drive itself. Though I am curious because the folks at the beginning of this thread had no problems burning shoddy media with their's, leads me to think that I have a defunct drive.

DEFINATELY remove the NVidia drivers, and USE Windows Drivers for the ROM DRIVE!!!!

Also, make sure you have ASPI 4.60 (NO LATER VERSION) installed, if you don't I'll give you a link.

The first revision of 1.01 firmware have definitively reading issue with some originals video DVD. Installing the last 1.01 firmware revision from MP3Mogul solves this kind of problem. But this is not a normal situation and LG must react quickly... Still no official firmware update for 4166 & 2166 !
