Ok I am also considering one of the three. As there is no 16x media available in the UK for the places I have checked (121cdr) then 8x is the top speed media. The NEC (from what I have read) does not like some types of media, so the best option is the LG as the new firmware will allow bitsetting right? I am going to order one today and I don't want to have to close my eyes and pick one The LG GSA4160B retail is £58 at ebuyer and the pioneer 108 oem is £56. Both instock and both in my basket but which to remove (or even add???) hmmmm

If it makes a difference the DVDRW will be connected to IDE1 as slave - should it be master? I am going to install my SATA drive at the same time as the DVDRW and remove the old HDD which was master and make the other drive master instead and the DVDRW slave.

Thanks for the advice, the support for the 3500 made me choose it over the others.

I did exactly the same thing at EBuyer Still do not know about CDRW. The ordinary way is not very convenient. I mean you put some files on CDRW and then you want to delete some of them and put some others. How do you do it if InCD (which I must admit a very crappy programme) is not supported by the drive?

Got my Nec and happy so far. Although have not much time to test it.

However, got an odd problem now. I've got some archives on CDRWs written with InCD when I had LiteON. Now when I try to copy files bigger than 1MB to my HD, the PC reboots. I tried to use my old CD-ROM - the same story. What happened? Any ideas?

"Ok...lemme explain again...for greater compatability with many newer stand-alone dvd players, a dvd writer that supports DVD+R booktype settings (this allows any DVD+R disc to be read as a DVD-Rom disc) is recommended. The NEC is the only drive out of the the group (NEC, Pioneer, LG) that supports booktype settings. If you're gonna backup up using DVD-R then booktype is not needed, in which case you can choose either the LG or the Pioneer (personally I'd go for the LG). I hope that clears things up..."


So this bitsetting thing isn't an issue at all for LG if I use DVD-R media to burn backup copies? right?

Pioneer hopefully burns DL media as DVD-ROM, not any other +R, while NEC does. LG is not yet but we hope soon it will.

I meant to say that people on this forum keep saying that with bitsetting feature you can burn DVD+R as DVD-R, but my question is that if I use DVD-R media for burning from the start, then bitsetting is not a concern? Am I right?

Also, is DL media +R only?
