I don't care about speed. And- bitsetting will be added, no? As for 4120...

Thanks for all your comments, but I still have no clue which burner to buy. I understand the error-rate of the Pioneer and the LG are better than the NEC. To be able to burn movies on both DVD- and DVD+, the LG is not a good option. Leaves me the Pioneer and the NEC (am I right?). Furtheron, I read conflicting data from tests on the Pioneer/NEC about errors. So, in the end, what to buy when I just want to burn data/movies on a DVD+/- and, in the future, on DL-discs? Make me decide! Thank you all enormously for your great support.

I do not know this for sure, it is simply a quote from Zeral1ty, on the first page.
He mentioned: "So if backing up movies is not your thing then go LG...otherwise go NEC!!!" On the other hand, I read that the NEC gets more errors than the LG and Pioneer.

More errors? Hardly. I get better results with ND-3500A than my friend with (nonfaulty hehe) Plextor. But read some more and make your own decision. I would go for NEC 3500A. If you want to rip movies fast then you can flash it with Herrie's firmware with riplock/region disabled. And I *love* 16x DVD+-R reading with NEC 3500. :) 5 min for whole DVD yehaa! :)

Ok...lemme explain again...for greater compatability with many newer stand-alone dvd players, a dvd writer that supports DVD+R booktype settings (this allows any DVD+R disc to be read as a DVD-Rom disc) is recommended. The NEC is the only drive out of the the group (NEC, Pioneer, LG) that supports booktype settings. If you're gonna backup up using DVD-R then booktype is not needed, in which case you can choose either the LG or the Pioneer (personally I'd go for the LG). I hope that clears things up...

I'm starting to get really confused now. Initially, I thought about the NEC, then the Pioneer, the LG and now again the NEC!!!!
Help me (don't have the money for all three ;))!
In the end, to buy the NEC (the cheapest) wouldn't be a stupid idea?

My needs:
- Movies (+/-/DL)
- Data
- Some slideshows for pictures
- Acurracy way more important than speed.

Perhaps I'm getting to irritate you....?

I can tell you first hand that low price doesn't mean low quality. At least with NEC, I cannot tell for other drives. I think you can use NEC for all tasks you pointed out. Check club.cdfreaks.com too (i hope admin wont be angry with me if i give link to other forum?).

I have the same fear. Everybody asks about the very same drives all the time LG vs. Pioneer vs. NEC. I'm about to buy a dvd writer myself and have a thread here about the same subject! But buying this is a big thing and there's allways something you wanna ask. So the threads keep proliferating. I can't tell you if they are getting irritated. I'm on the "irritating" side. And just wanted to tell you you are not alone :)

It's a <$100 purchase, how hard can it be? It's not like you're buying a $30k car!

I have been really happy with my NEC 3500. The only thing I really hate is the unit sux at reading scratched pressed DVDs. I assume this is what you mean by "NEC gets more errors".

You can pick up a good DVD-ROM reader for <$30 if you have to...
