Thermalright is a company with a long history in the enthusiast PC market and they have created some of the best, hardcore CPU coolers over the last decade. Today we will have a look at two of their greatest CPU coolers, the Ultra-120 eXtreme and the IFX-14. The Ultra-120 eXtreme is an updated version of the extremely successful Ultra-120, while the IFX-14 has quickly became famous because of the monstrous size.

The Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme heatsink is a continuation of the Ultra-120 series, only with a little more muscle and a couple extra heatpipes. It's predecessor has remained at the top of Frostytech thermal test results for both AMD and Intel platforms basically since we tested it, so we're especially interested to see how the Ultra-120 Extreme model handles. Like the Ultra-120 that came before it, the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme applies fairly simple concepts to yield a well performing tower heatsink that doesn't have to generate much noise to get the job done.

Another Thermalright review comes to an end and the improvements made on the Ultra 120 eXtreme from its predecessor have been very beneficial. Installation is simple and the included backplates give stability to the system and alleviates the risk of damaging your motherboard or having an improper installation. However, the Ultra 120 eXtreme shines most when it comes to performance. It was able to keep up with my TEC cooler with ease and it smoked the rest of the competition.

While CPU's are continuing to get more and more power efficient and cooler, the heatsinks that are strapped on top continue to get larger. The current trend seems to be large, tower heatsinks with plenty of heatpipes sending heat to the fins. Today I have the ThermalRight Ultra 120 eXtreme heatsink that features the ability to mount a slow spinning 120mm fan.
