D-Link's DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router gives us plenty of bandwidth with a built in four port Gigabit switch on the wired side and Draft N wireless capability up to 300 Mbps. They say this is 14x faster than 802.11 G, but by my math, it should only be 5.5x faster (300 / 54?anyways). It also boasts improved range, up to 6X more range, than regular D-Link 802.11g routers. Getting this range requires the use of one of their Xtreme N wireless adapters, so no Xtreme N on both ends, no Xtreme N range.

Draft N is all the buzz around the WiFi circles, and manufacturers are pushing their early products onto store shelves dispite the constant technical changes to the new unapproved draft. Although early product relases incorporating the 802.11n draft 1.0 were first seen in 2006, they did not seem to win over critics' opinion because of poor performance. The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router is a draft 802.11n compliant device which claims to be up to 14x faster and have 6x the range of 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices.

If you're looking for Draft 802.11n speeds (naturally, D-Link recommends that you pair the DIR-655 with its Xtreme N Notebook Adapter performance) and greater coverage for your entire home or small office, D-Link's DIR-655 should be at the top of your list. Draft 802.11n isn't a great leap in performance though, and in out tests we could only manage a wireless speed (from a Draft 802.11n-enabled laptop) of 48.9Mbit/s from 6-feet away. Moving the laptop two rooms down our office resulted in a drop of speed to 27.5 Mbit/s. Nevertheless the DIR-655 sports a raft of configuration options, has a configurable QoS engine, and the extensive list of preconfigured applications in the port forwarding setup are greatly appreciated. And now it even has Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports. Highly recommended.
