ZyXEL has been so busy of late getting its fingers in other networking pies that it almost let the draft 802.11n high-speed wireless specification slip by. Every one of its competitors has brought product to market and now, well over six months since the first examples appeared from the likes of Netgear, D-Link and Linksys, it has finally released its own solution.

This compact appliance supports up to 10 SSL VPN tunnels but can be upgraded to 25 tunnels. It comes with a quad of switched Fast Ethernet ports and a single RJ-45 WAN port, which can be connected to a broadband modem or to an existing gateway. It has its own SPI/NAT firewall so can front an Internet connection, or you can drop it into a DMZ behind an existing firewall.

The NSA-2400 is equipped with a decent 1.3GHz Via C3 processor although this is only teamed up with 128MB of memory, which cannot be upgraded. You get a single Gigabit Ethernet port and a pair of USB 2.0 ports at the rear with a third USB port on the front panel. All three USB ports can be used for connecting external storage devices but the appliance doesn't support sharing USB printers. On connection a USB device is automatically shared on the network with NTFS file systems restricted to read-only.

ZyXEL has traditionally offered one of the largest ranges of wireless broadband routers but its latest P-336M signals a sea change in its product line as out go the dull blue boxes of the Prestige range and in come a raft of sleek silver slabs. Not only that but it also represents ZyXEL's first MIMO wireless product. So far, ZyXEL has resisted the temptation to join in the draft 802.11n bun fight but we were advised that it expects to deliver compliant product at the end of this year. To that end this currently makes the P-336M the fastest wireless product in ZyXEL's stable.

The router is a compact box with a four port Fast Ethernet switch at the rear along with an RJ-11 port for the integrated ADSL modem and a reset button for returning the unit back to factory defaults. The wireless access point (AP) is endowed with a single aerial and MIMO is not supported. For higher wireless speeds you get ZyXEL's Wireless g+ SuperSpeed technology which aims to boost 802.11g speeds to a theoretical maximum of 125Mbit/sec...

The AG-225H is a well designed, pocket sized package that comes complete with a short carrying cord and a USB extender cable. The front panel is home to a small LCD panel and the unit can be powered on and off with a switch underneath, while the two buttons on the upper surface are used to initiate a wireless scan and to scroll through the list of identified access points. It would have been nice if the LCD display was backlit - especially as the unit uses a Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) battery which is recharged whenever connected to a USB port...

The ZyWALL 5 is a solid little steel box which comes equipped with a 266MHz Intel IXP422 network processor and 32MB of SDRAM memory. Four switched Fast Ethernet ports are provided for LAN connections and the single Ethernet WAN port can be used to connect to an existing gateway or an ADSL or cable modem with an Ethernet interface. Any of the LAN ports can be designated for DMZ duties if required...
