SMC offers a simple solution for providing wireless hotspot services with a range of payment methods. It's still a little pricey but is particularly easy to set up and use, provides good accounting facilities and is better value bundle than ZyXEL's G-4100 hotspot, which costs around £100 more.

SMC delivers a nicely built NAS appliance at a reasonable price. The documentation could be more informative and it does come up well short of features when compared with the likes of Buffalo, NetGear, Synology and QNAP but performance is a cut above the rest.

We don't normally publish reviews on networking hardware and other peripherals unless we have thoroughly tested the product internally for some time and find it to be truly great or a product that is simply a disaster. Today we have the SMC SMC2870W 802.11g Wireless Ethernet Bridge. This wireless bridge is capable of turning any wired networking device into a wireless node and can also act as an Internet Access Point along with a built-in 802.11b/g repeater. What category of righteousness does this product fall into? Well, for Linux users, the SMC bridge is falling down.

As a NAS appliance the SMCWAGS-G is a little basic with at best average performance but factor in its extreme portability, support for USB and internal IDE disks, useful 802.11g multi-function wireless capabilities and good security and you have one very handy little storage device for mobile users...

SMC has always tried to make its broadband routers stand out with extra features and its latest Barricade VOICE ADSL Router does just that. The access point (AP) comes with five switched Fast Ethernet ports and no less than four of them can be used to provide simultaneous Internet access. You can add four ADSL or cable modems, enter their respective ISP login details and the AP will perform load balancing across all WAN ports in use. If any fail then all traffic will be switched to the active WAN links. Standard hacker protection is provided by NAT and an SPI firewall to which you can add custom packet filtering rules and apply them to specific ports. You can also stop wireless traffic from being passed to the LAN ports allowing you to isolate wireless users and restrict them to accessing only the WAN port...
