If there is one camera brand that is all geared up to take the imaging world by storm this year, Ricoh might just be it. While other top camera brands like Olympus and Panasonic are going the Micro Four Thirds way, Ricoh has decided to be an island and rethink its own camera system.

Ricoh's R10 is an extremely rugged digital camera that makes shooting stills and videos relatively painless. It might look like it has been designed by a 5-year-old, but it takes well-balanced shots that are crisp and colourful thanks to the 10-Megaxpixel lens. Sure they're not up scratch for advanced photographers, but general consumers should be satisfied. A 7.1x optical wide-angle zoom is better than most in this price range too, as is the level of in-camera editing controls. There?s not much in the way of advanced exposure controls, but the R10 is very much targeted a beginners and those who just want to point and shoot. It's weighty enough to feel like a 'proper' camera too. Ricoh's not about to dethrone Canon or Nikon (or Olympus, Panasonic or Sony), but with the R10 the company has produced a camera that?s good value for money.

Once again Ricoh demonstrates that in terms of technical ability and value for money, its cameras are among the best on the market. The Caplio R7 is an outstandingly versatile pocket compact with an unmatched list of features. It is stylish, well made, has blindingly fast performance and excellent picture quality, at a price that beats its few competitors. If it doesn't sell like hot cakes this Christmas then Ricoh needs to fire its advertising agency.

The Caplio R5 was announced in August this year, and is now the flagship of Ricoh's zoom compact range. It has a specification unmatched by any other compact camera on the market, offering 28-200mm-equivalent optical zoom, 7.24 megapixel resolution, 2.5in 230,000 pixel monitor, 1,600 ISO sensitivity and moving sensor image stabilisation. This is all contained in a package measuring 96 x 55 x 26mm and weighing just 140g. It has a current high street price of £249.99, but is available online for around £239. This is a little on the expensive side but compares reasonably well with what is probably its closest match, the 6x zoom Canon PowerShot A710IS.

Anyone who's looked into buying a digital camera recently will have noticed that the biggest defining characteristic of the range of cameras on offer is conformity. Every manufacturer's range is pretty much exactly like that of their competitors in terms of size, specification and price. In a market dominated by mid-range 3x zoom 6MP compacts, it's a brave company indeed that breaks the mould and launches something completely original. However with the introduction of the GR Digital, Ricoh has done exactly that...

Digital cameras have got so sophisticated in the past couple of years that it is getting increasingly difficult for a new model to make any sort of impact, especially if it comes from a company outside of the "big
five". Take this Ricoh Caplio R3 for example. It's a pocket-sized compact with a 2.5in LCD monitor, 7.1x optical zoom, image stabilization and a 5 megapixel CCD. In most respects it has an extremely impressive
specification for just £219, but it seems that most people have completely ignored it...

Well quite simply this camera was a surprise to me and I am still learning how to use it to this day, I was really quite pleasantly surprised with the professional features at this price, ok around 300 GBP its not cheap but when you way up the features and the 8.2m pixel into the mix you are talking one serious piece of kit without the cost usually associated with this end of the scale. Add to that you can now connect a portable drive via mini USB for storage makes it even more appealing. From the novice looking for that bit more than just 5 or six functions on a camera to the Pro that wants to set his own shutter exposure settings for their photos, to someone just is starting out in professional photography the Ricoh Caplio GX8 has it all and comes highly recommended by us...

The Caplio GX8 is a technical marvel with superb adaptability, outstanding performance, some very useful features and good handling. For the price it offers more pixel power than almost anything else on the market, but there are other even more capable cameras available to the advanced user. You'll have to decide if it's really what you're looking for, but if it is then it won't disappoint.
