Over the years, Research in Motion's (R.I.M.'s) BlackBerry cell phone has developed a wide following, especially of business users. The BlackBerry keyboard is one of the most loved features of the BlackBerry. Now, however, under competitive pressure from the iPhone and other touch screen cell phones, RIM has decided to create a version of the BlackBerry with a touch screen rather than their traditional BlackBerry keypad. Touchscreen smartphones are certainly a big hit right now. If you consider Apple's ever-popular iPhone, HTC's well-liked Touch lineup, and many others, touch is a high-demand feature. Manufacturers are certainly taking note of this fact. Traditionally speaking, the BlackBerry line of smartphones share a common layout with a QWERTY keyboard located beneath a standard (i.e. non-touchscreen) display.

With the Pearl 8120, RIM is clearly trying to push further into the consumer's consciousness and retain its business fans too. The device doesn't go far enough to capture all consumers - where's the 3G and the oodles of internal memory, for example? But it does show that RIM is trying harder than ever to break out of its 'businesses only' box. Design-wise it's on the button. Features-wise there is still a little way to go. And as a whole, it's certainly recommended.

With the 8820, RIM has essentially taken an already fantastic business tool and by adding Wi-Fi, made it even better. It's what the 8800 should have been from the start.

Research In Motion's Blackberry range of devices have taken the corporate world by storm and caught many traditional handset makers off guard. Nokia only recently stepped up to the plate with their E61 and Windows Mobile devices are in the minority in such environments. However this competition has led Research in Motion (RIM), to look away from their utilitarian designs and appeal to a broader market.
