We're writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of the Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition NAS Server. The Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition is more than just an updated version of the Maxtor Central Axis. The previous version featured 1TB of storage capacity, while the new version supports up to 2TB. The Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition includes two user-swappable, 1TB hard drives and the device supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. The Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition also features a redesigned, larger chassis than its predecessor, and includes two USB 2.0 ports (as opposed to the single USB port on the previous version) for additional storage, removable backups, or even networking a printer. Come on by and check it out...

The BlackArmor 160GB encrypted portable drive provides a unique twist on a rather common item. Portable hard drives are everywhere, and in general are easy ways for people to lose valuable personal or business data. Security is the key feature of this product, and if protecting your portable data is a high priority, Maxtor has made it just about fool proof.

Maxtor's diminutive OneTouch 4 Mini pushes the capacity envelope again, packing a positively huge 320 gigabytes of storage into a tiny enclosure. It's also one of the sexiest mini external drives we've seen. Is the OneTouch 4 Mini 320GB a portable storage slam-dunk?

If you're the paranoid type or just someone who cannot afford to have his or her data stolen, the Maxtor BlackArmor external backup drive will likely bring you a large dose of piece-of-mind. Data on the drive is encrypted with a key at the hardware level using government-grade 128-bit AES encryption, so if you lose it whoever finds it will have zero chance of recovering the data. Even better, if someone steals the drive and doesn't have the password, they can reformat the drive but the process destroys the encryption key, making all the data inaccessible even by data recovery professionals. This high level of security comes with a high price tag though, and the drive also suffers a few design drawbacks too, so you should only consider it if data security is a top priority.

We were so impressed with the Central Axis upgrade for the Shared Storage II at CES that we thought we'd check out the NAS itself prior to the official launch of that software. With 1TB of storage, will the SSII warrant a purchase, with it's higher price point?

The market seems littered with hard drive enclosures and portable hard drives these days, yet we still seem to run into a new one every couple of weeks from some XYZ Company. Then Seagate sent over one of their Maxtor branded 250 GB portable hard drives known as their OneTouch 4 Mini. Although Seagate has its own line of min portable hard drives, the Maxtor drive provides distinctly more powerful backup features, despite a slightly more cobbled look versus the sleeker lines of their FreeAgent Pro products. Does the OneTouch 4 Mini wallow in mediocrity, or does it fight for its right to party? Let's find out!

We look at the Maxtor 2.5" external hard disk today that not only looks good but performs quite fast, is extremely silent and can take a hit or two.

Choosing the right external HDD can be tough. In order to sell, products such as the OneTouch 4 rely on their robust software bundle to help move off the shelf. People should be given a solid backup suite, especially given the price. This is exactly where Maxtor fell short, with their OneTouch 4 Plus.

There are many options out there when it comes to external hard drives, so it is difficult to get too excited about any of them unless they do something really special. While the 80GB Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini looks good, works well, and is easy to use, what really sets it apart from many of the other drives on the market is the software.

If there's one thing Maxtor does well it's build quality. This chunky appliance is extremely well manufactured. The solid plastic shell feels very sturdy and the side panels are covered with rubber panels that also stop the unit sliding around on the desktop. Another advantage is that they absorb any vibration making the appliance very quiet during operations. A small internal fan is fitted at the rear but this doesn't make any noticeable noise either. You get a single Gigabit Ethernet port at the rear along with a couple of USB 2.0 ports that can be used to connect extra storage device or share printers over the network.

Maxtor is actually offering two product families with the 300GB Shared Storage version on review here. The Shared Storage Plus is physically identical and is also offered in 200GB and 300GB capacities. The only difference between the two is the software bundle as the Plus model comes with Maxtor's SimpleView backup utility and its MediaRetriever which is aimed at networked home entertainment systems for playing back digital video, music and pictures...
