?External hard drive enclosures are very common these days, especially with large file sizes of HD movies and other content. A single-drive external hard drive enclosure works for most people, but people who want to protect their data and want faster speeds opt for a dual hard drive enclosure with RAID capabilities. Today we will be looking at one such enclosure from ICY DOCK called the MB662US-2S, which features RAID 0, RAID 1, BIG, and JBOD configurations. Let?s see if this is the perfect external enclosure for you."

A multi-bay backplane module is a box the size of a couple optical drives stacked on top of one another that stores a handful of serial ATA hard drives in compact, individually hot swappable drive caddy's. When internal hard drive space in a computer case is full, or if quick access to hard drives is called for, this box will allow you to add up to three SATA hard drives in the space normally occupied by two 5.25" optical drives. IcyDock call this module the MB453SPF-B.

Any hard drive enclosure will allow you to take your files with you, but what makes the Icy Dock enclosure appealing is the tool-less installation, the build quality, and above average eSATA transfer rates. The MB664US-1SB enclosure is very heavy duty, which provides a little extra peace of mind that your data is well protected while in transit.

Swappable hard drives are nothing new, we have seen them for over 5 years now. One thing that was always a pain was that if I wanted to move something from my desktop to laptop I could not with a swappable hard drive, I had to do it with a flash drive or USB hard drive. There are drawbacks to both of these first the flash drive can only hold so much data and the external USB hard drives are usually big and are not fun to carry around with you. Icydock has a solution for this problem the MB663 hard drive enclosure. It is a 2.5-inch external enclosure that comes with a 3.5-inch internal swappable bay.

In my last review I talked about how external drives are becoming very popular and today I will be taking a look at a very big external hard drive enclosure. This enclosure can hold 4 SATA drives that are connected to your PC via eSATA cables for maximum speed. Also did I mention the drives are hot swappable so you can take a drive out and use it in another enclosure. The enclosure I'm talking about is the Icydock MB561. Let's take a look...

The Icy Dock MB452 is an external eSATA and USB2.0 hard drive enclosure whose removable drive caddy is compatible with the companies PC mounted MB122SKGF system. The removable serial ATA hard drive caddy's are interchangeable with each product family, allowing internal and external drives to be swapped in a few moments. The unit is black in colour with some nice aluminum detailing and vibration reducing rubber feet; multiple units can be stacked one atop the next, or it can be stood on its edge on rubber feet. The HDD caddy is made of aluminum, supports serial ATA I and serial ATA II hard drives only.

The IcyDock M122SKGF removable hard drive rack is a hot swappable Serial ATA device, with integrated LCD display and thermal alarm. The unit is beige in colour, and supports Serial ATA I and Serial ATA II hard drives. The HDD caddy is made of aluminum which should help keep high speed drives a littler cooler than plastic would. There is also a small 40mm ADDA fan at the back of the unit to draw air through the unit. On the front of the HDD caddy is blue LED illuminated LCD that displays the ambient temperature and has a few simple temperature related alarm controls.

With so many companies making external hard drive enclosures it is hard to separate yourself from the rest and make a unique product. Well Icydock specializes in hard drive enclosures and they have really impressed me with their latest offering the MB559 external removable hard drive enclosure. It is one of the best external hard drive enclosures that I have seen. With all of its features it really sets itself apart from all the other enclosures out there so let's take a look.

One of the biggest issues I had when wanting to use Icydock's other internal drive enclosures was space. If you are using a full tower then you might not have a problem with fitting all of the drives in there you want, but if you are using a mid-tower or something else you may not be able to fit all of those enclosures in there. Well today we are taking a look at another enclosure from Icydock. This enclosure is a 3 drive enclosure, but only takes up 2 5.25" spots. So it saves you space and allows for up to 3 drives to be installed. So let's take a look at the MB453 drive enclosure.

The Icy Dock MB455SPF 5-Bay Internal SATA Drive Enclosure is a great choice for someone that needs more hard drive bays or hot-swap capabilities. If you have a RAID array spanning multiple drives, something like this is an excellent idea since it allows you to use as little space as possible, lets you swap out drives on the fly, and provides additional cooling to the drives.

The concept of removable hard drive docks have been around for some time now. So, when a company approaches stating that they want you to review one of these devices it is important that they bring something new to the board. Well, the company is Icy Dock and the product is a removable hard drive dock. But the difference between this and any other hard drive enclosure is the addition of a few touches to the device that make it more that a hard drive enclosure. The MB122 provides portability, security and monitoring and that is just for starters.
