All-in-all, the MusicPal is a competent Internet radio. It's easy to use and set up, it has a decent range of features and it comes in at a reasonable price too, at under £100. But it's a fiddle to add BBC radio stations, it's not the most solidly engineered product and sound quality isn't wonderful. It looks like we've still got a bit of a wait yet for a DAB-beating Internet radio to emerge after all.

Take one outrageously well engineered network drive. Attach two 802.11g wireless antenna. What do you get? A sumptuous network attached storage device that looks like it has come right out of Apple's design studio. Thankfully, Freecom's DataTank Gateway WLAN (£369) is not the preserve of Apple fanboys - it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, making it a neat choice for design conscious users looking to share large files in style.

Like Netgear's highly capable EVA 8000 I reviewed a couple of months back, this can connect to your home network wirelessly and stream audio, video and HD video content straight to your TV or hi-fi so you can watch all those downloaded files without having to burn them onto DVD or connect your laptop to the telly.

Freecom's Network Drive isn't really about raw speed and tons of features. It's a stylish device that makes light work of sharing data over a small network or the Internet. And because it has a USB 2.0 port you can stick it in your briefcase and use it to backup large files from your laptop on the move (power source needed). The downside is that the Network Drive isn't really a proper NAS device - you'll have to go elsewhere if you want flexible storage capacity, Gigabit Ethernet, backup and recovery tools, and support for multiple platforms.

It's taken over a year but Freecom has finally added wireless capabilities to its neat little FSG-3 Storage Gateway desktop NAS appliance. We first looked at the Storage Gateway back in 2005 and were mightily impressed with the range of features it offered. The WLAN model delivers pretty much the same facilities but now includes an 802.11g wireless access point.

The FSG-3 incorporates four Fast Ethernet ports with one acting as a WAN port for connecting an external ADSL modem. An internal DHCP server dishes out IP addresses and DNS details so LAN clients can have Internet access and this is protected by an SPI firewall...Read on...

The Classic SL Network Drive brings together a unique solution for local and networked storage and delivers a fair turn of speed as well. The installation process is a bit of a pain and we would only recommend NDAS for Windows 2000, XP and 2003 users but it does offer some good security options and doesn't cost much more than a standard USB external drive.
