Hi! I´ve seen in other posts that it is possible to update 6100A´s firmware using 6500A´s firmware (that´s very interesting because 6100A does not burn DVD-R/RW media!). I´ve tried using all the versions avalaible for the 6500A and when I try to burn DVD-R/RW media (Fuji and Verbatim using Nero) it keeps saying "Illegal disc".

Is it REALLY possible to update the 6100A with the 6500A firmware? Which version?

With 6500? Yes there is, just grab the 2.23 Liggy firmware from the sticky topic of 6500 firmware

Oooops!

I have just flashed my 6100@6500 with the Liggy 2.23 firmware and it is still not possible to change booktype for -/+R or -/+RW media (only available for +R DL media).

I am using DVDinfoPro to change booktype: should I use any other utility?

I´m still thinking that it is not possible to change booktype, except for the +R DL media.

I've flashed the nec 6100a in my dell latitude d600 to a 6500a and it works perfectly... I haven't got an +R DL to try write to - would it work? I doubt it... firmwares is amazing but it can't really turn my +R/RW drive to dual format and dual layer.. can it?

yours hopefully!

blitus;

(Emperor correct me if I'm wrong here)....The 6100A is an OEM 6500A. The 6500A is a +R DL burner. I'm not sure there is a way to make the drive -R DL currently or somebody would've tried it. I'm not sure what's involved.

The 6500 is a +/- R/RW burner.
See Spec's here...
http://support.necsam.com/oem/cd-rom/ND6500A.asp

No -R DL listed

I have the 6100A in my Dell laptop, and I flashed it with the 6500 2.40 firmware several months ago. I've been able to use -R media, but I've realised that I can no longer burn audio CDs correctly. They have distorted parts in songs, and it's usually only the first few tracks that will play.

I'm obviously wanting to fix this, so I'm hoping that someone can direct me to the right firmware once and for all.
http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/6500.html lists so many different firmware versions. How does one know which is right? I have no idea what firmware it came with originally. :(

Someone mentioned 2.23. The above site lists 2.24. Is this more recent/better?

Which is better TDB or Liggy's firmware?

Thanks! :)

Thanks.  I flashed my NEC 6100A with the Liggy 2.24 firmware and it seems to be working fine.  When I burn a data DVD in Nero, the progress bar doesn't work 100% correctly, but everything burns and verifies correctly.

I guess I made a bad choice when I flashed the drive to TDB 2.4 firmware a few months ago.  I burnt heaps of music CDs for my sister, and she complained that they were faulty, and I blamed her CD player.  It was in fact the incorrect firmware. ;)

Hi!

I have some problem here. I have a Dell D600 with a NEC ND-6100A. As i read it, I tried to flash it to 6500A. Fist, I tried the TDB firmware. The flashing was OK, but after that I still was not able to wirte DVD-R discs. It said: illegal disc. Then I tired Liggy's 2.24 firmware. The flashing was OK again. However, when I tried to burn a DVD-R media, the burning can not complete even the lead-in phase. After the (I think it was a big fault) I tiried this slave thing and flashed the Liggy's 4.24 firmware. The falshing was OK, however after that I was not able to boot up my laptop!! The DVD seems to be the problem. Without the DVD drive everything is OK. So my questions are:

1. How can I repair my drive? Is there any way to flash it back to a master firmware?
2. Which firmware to use?

Thanks!
AM

I also have a 6100A in my Dell 8600 laptop and it couldn't burn DVD+R disks rated at over 8x speed - it would fail without writing any data. It took me a while to realise what the problem was - I kept on buying different brands (TDK, Sony, Verbatim) thinking it was just crappy media, but it was because they were all rated at 16x.

I tried to flash it with the TDB 6100 firmware, both DOS and Windows versions, which didn't fix it (although maybe I didn't do the DOS one correctly?).

What worked in the end was the TDB 6500 Windows version:

http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND6500A

I used the "203D (DELL) TDB Windows Flasher" and just ran the file 6500FAST in windows as per the readme file included in the zip package. I used NECflash first, as recommended elsewhere in this forum, to back-up the old firmware.

I just successfully burnt a 16x DVD+R disk, no problem. The drive identifies itself as the 6500A now... yet to try other media, I'm just happy that I can now use the 125 assorted brand DVD+R disks that I collected in the process of working out that the problem wasn't the disks but the drive!

Thanks to all the folks who posted to this thread, and the other similar ones on this forum.

Spacezi, I am in pretty much the same situation, but was having a little trouble with this as its the first time I've flashed some hardware.

I went over to http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/ and downloaded the gui version.  Backup was created just fine.

Then I downloaded the 203D dell version and unzipped it.

In the readme it says to run this in a non-windows command prompt, but you said
"and just ran the file 6500FAST in windows as per the readme file included "  How did you do this / what command did you use?

I tried opening a command prompt in windows any typed
nec6x00a -sec -mas -flash 6500FAST.BIN

But to be honest, I didn't know if the cd drive was a secondary master or not. Regardless nothing was changed, not even after a reboot.

Thanks!

Since you are new at this, you should just use Liggy's Binflash Win32 GUI (or Win64 GUI if you're using Windows XP/Vista x64).  This will let you flash both .BIN firmwares and .EXE (Flasher with embedded .BIN file).

Just forget about the TDB firmware and their *real* DOS firmware flasher.  Stick with Liggy & Dee's firmwares since they have the latest over there. The latest is really 203e and 403e.
http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/NEC-ND-6500A/

Also this is important.  Liggy's Binflash should prevent you from flashing the wrong (master or slave) firmware to a drive with the opposite bootcode.  So for your situation if you have a 2.XX firmware now, then stick with the 2.XX firmware.  The 4.XX firmwares are for slave bootcodes and that's it, no difference.

Finally, if you're cross-flashing an ND-6100 to an ND-6500, then don't forget to use Liggy's NEC Drive Converter and toggle the drive ID to ND-6500.  Otherwise you might not be able to write to DVD-R(W) discs.
