spacezi -> RE: NEC 6100A laptop burner Firmware (1/12/2007 6:04:47 AM)

I also have a 6100A in my Dell 8600 laptop and it couldn't burn DVD+R disks rated at over 8x speed - it would fail without writing any data. It took me a while to realise what the problem was - I kept on buying different brands (TDK, Sony, Verbatim) thinking it was just crappy media, but it was because they were all rated at 16x. I tried to flash it with the TDB 6100 firmware, both DOS and Windows versions, which didn't fix it (although maybe I didn't do the DOS one correctly?). What worked in the end was the TDB 6500 Windows version: http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND6500A I used the "203D (DELL) TDB Windows Flasher" and just ran the file 6500FAST in windows as per the readme file included in the zip package. I used NECflash first, as recommended elsewhere in this forum, to back-up the old firmware. I just successfully burnt a 16x DVD+R disk, no problem. The drive identifies itself as the 6500A now... yet to try other media, I'm just happy that I can now use the 125 assorted brand DVD+R disks that I collected in the process of working out that the problem wasn't the disks but the drive! Thanks to all the folks who posted to this thread, and the other similar ones on this forum.
