Warranty is not void, since your drive still showed at NEC.[;)]

although nothing is wrong with my drive, thats good to know =].

Ok, I just bought my NED 3520A, and I'm burning a few coasters. I'm interested in updating the firmware but I have no idea which to use. I would like to go ahead and use 3.22, but it says its for I-O Data. I don't know if my drive is a re-badged I-O Data drive. Is that a problem? OR can I flash my drive (or ANY 3520a) with the new 3.22 firmware and have no problems?

Another way of wording it: Is the new 3.22 I-O Data firmware from NEC ONLY for I-O Data (rebadged) 3520A's?

rahzel -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/25/2005 4:57:14 PM)

correct me if im wrong but i dont think its i-odata drives rebadged to NEC... i think its the actual firmware thats i-odata but rebadged so your NEC drive's name remains NEC not i-odata. Its fine to use the 3.22 i-odata with any NEC 3520 (but get the rebadged to NEC version so it still shows up as NEC).

btw, what kind of DVD's are you using? i recommend to everyone not to buy cheap media, atleast get decent media like ritek, optodisc etc.

adam71o -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/25/2005 5:21:06 PM)

Well, I have no grounds to correct anyone, as I'm a total n00b with this drive. So you're saying I CAN upgrade to the 3.22 firmware with no (likely) problems?

I'm using Memorex 8x dvd+r media.

rahzel -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/25/2005 5:50:15 PM)

the DVD's media code is what shows the real DVD's maker (not always tho cuz there are fakes) but Memorex doesnt make their own DVD media. Usually memorex DVD's are made by like CMC MAG(crap), Ritek(decent), MCC(good), Prodisc(crap) and more. As you can see, when you buy memorex, its all luck of the draw. Your coasters might possibly be due cuz of crap media. Updating your firmware might help as different firmware versions may have higher media compatability but not always. Make sure you backup your original firmware before flashing if you havnt already.

as for the 3.22 firmware, im 90% sure its safe for ALL NEC 3520 drives but i wouldnt take my word for it. Id wait for some1 more knowledgable about firmwares to answer that question as im a n00b at flashing firmware (but not a n00b when it comes to DVD burning).

emperor -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/25/2005 6:00:55 PM)

The 3.22 was released from IODATA but can be used with all drives that recognized as ND-3520A...I hope that solves all questions [:)]

adam71o -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/25/2005 7:53:03 PM)

It does, thanks!

ciroopi -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/26/2005 2:22:23 AM)

but, what does it mean, that it doesn't have PI/PIF?
that we have no "official" pi/pif results?
sorry but i can't understand. -a bit newbie ;)

rahzel -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/26/2005 2:46:47 AM)

pi/pif tests are to test the quality of a burn mainly to test the quality of the burner and the DVD media itself. It shows a graph of the whole burn process showing how good it is.

unfortunately, the NEC 3520 doesnt support it and currently, theres no firmware that supports it either (but there will be soon i think).

souless -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/27/2005 4:36:51 PM)

Hi,
I downloaded the IO 3.22 firmware rebadged from scorpio's site and when i run the install i get an error which says "Target Nec ND-3520A is not fount correctly".
What can i do ?

THanks.

rahzel -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/27/2005 8:25:41 PM)

you dont install them, you have to flash them with a flasher like binflash. Get binflashGUI, dump current firmware, then update firmware. Navigate to the exe, follow the steps and reboot when prompt.

shoota -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/28/2005 10:45:49 PM)

whats the difference between the 3.03 and the 3.22 firmware, is the 3.22 newer?

rahzel -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/29/2005 1:35:26 AM)

im curious about 3.03 too. It says dual layer +R bitsetting -rom, does 3.22 not have that feature? also does 3.03 support DL -R too? which is better?

scorpiosoft -> RE: NEC 3520A and OEM official firmware overview! (3/29/2005 1:52:23 AM)

The 3.03 and 3.22 have the same write strategy so there's no difference.

For the 3520 firmware release date, see: http://support.necsam.com/oem/downloads/flashfirmware/

so theres absolutely NO difference between 3.22 and 3.03? they both support -R DL and they both change +R DL (or all +R/RW media for that matter) booktype to -ROM? thats all i care about.

btw, its about time NEC officially releases a firmware update for this writer.
