Yes you can flash your drive. You can use BinFlash to do this.

Thanks for your answer. So 2.18SE is the unofficial firware based on the most recent official firmware isn't it ?

emperor -> RE: NEC 3500AG Drive (11/27/2004 2:07:35 PM)

yes that is correct, with the binflash you can use any firmware you wish

Hi, i've been looking around on this forum for a few days now and after some research I decided to take a spindle from Fuji, the yuden t02 series..

I've got a brand new Nec 3500A dvd writer and updated my firmware to the 218btrpc1.rar firmware... the unofficial 2.18 firmware..

but now i'm starting to use the fuji dvd+r discs, which firmware will suit me the best? anybody got sugestions for the best firmware to take now?

thnx in advance

Hello to Emperor ! (and all of you)

I have a NEC 3500AG drive and I am currently using the Mad Dog 2.FA firmware because:
1°) 2.FA is an official firmare
2°) it does BookType setting towards DVD-ROM for DVD+R9, DVD+R and DVD+RW (only on new never burned DVD+RW's)

The only "missing" thing in 2.FA is that it has not the newest writing strategies for DVD+R's (the 1.58g strategy like in the official firmwares NEC 2.18 and TDK 2.79)
So I am waiting for the release of the TDK 2.C9 which should have the latest writing strategies and the automatic bitsetting. Do you know when this TDK 2.C9 upgrade is coming out ?

Could you please by the way explain us the exact difference between:
- "Yes" bitsetting is "allowed" by a firmware, and
- "Auto bitsetting"

Keep on with your great job informing end users about what is going on in their DVD writers !

pbush77 -> RE: NEC 3500AG Drive (1/1/2005 11:29:09 PM)

Hi all! I'm new here, and although I'm fairly confident in what I'm doing, I do have a few questions which just keep popping up. I've read through most threads that I could find relating to the subject, but couldn't find specific answers to my needs. My apologies if it IS somewhere that I couldn't find here. Pointing me in the right direction would be wonderful.

I updated my firmware to what I believe is the latest - 2.C8 SE, yet I don't see any speed improvements whatsoever. Before this, I had a ripped 2.18 firmware instead. My biggest concern is that, in Nero, I cannot seem to get any speeds faster than 8x - no matter what media I try. The actual burning speed seems to be even slower than this, also. In my external 8x recorder, I can burn a disc in 6 and a half minutes or so. Trying those same discs in my NEC takes around 9 and a half minutes, which I find very strange, especially considering this recorder is supposed to be able to do up to 16x (obviously with the right media).

Still, am I incorrect in thinking that the 2.C8 SE firmware should allow me to record at faster speeds than the media is supposed to work? I hear people all the time saying how they got 8x media to record safely at 12x, etc., but obviously I have no option to try that, and am having enough problems trying to get the 8x media to REALLY record at true 8x. Is the problem with Nero, my media, the drive itself, or the firmware? Thanks for any help!

You should try then Quickee modified firmware, it has increased the writing speeds for many known media

Thanks, but I have not heard of this particular firmware. Where would I find it?
