Are there any tool to find what write strategy has my firmware? How can I check it?
KenW have you installed NEC K350GN8M, aka 2.18 firmware? How does it works?

emperor -> RE: NEC 3500 and OEM official firmware overview 14/10/2004 Updated! (11/9/2004 4:53:26 PM)

Updated 10/11/2004:
- Added 218.bin [8D]

So who do we bug about getting a new firmware hacked from the new 2.18 that is like the 2.C8 SE firmware? I've got a bunch of TY 002 that I want to be able to burn at 16X and I'd love to use this new firmware.

TY002 is not burned at 16X?

techfuzz -> RE: NEC 3500 and OEM official firmware overview 14/10/2004 Updated! (11/9/2004 5:48:37 PM)

I didn't see it as an improvement in the list of media and the 2.C8 SE media specifically stated that 8X media was changed to be burned at 16X. I haven't tried it myself so I'm only assuming based on what I've read.

Emperor,

Does the NEC 2.18 (original) has DVD+R bitsetting supports (DVD-ROM) for SL?

The full list of media codes and their writing speeds has been released here:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=743125&postcount=219

I had a look at it and compared it with 2.C8 and I could not see any downgrades at all. There are quite few additions though and few speedups ... so from this point of view, 2.18 seems to be an improvement to 2.C8. [:D]

Hopefully the writing quality will match this observation too ... its a pitty there's no SL bitsetting though [:@]

It looks like you are correct cvs, the TY 002 media I have is now supported in this new firmware according to this:
-> [YUDEN000T02 ] 2.4 4.0 6.0 8.0 12.0 16.0

SL bitsetting is a bummer though. I really need it more than anything else. I could have lived with 8X-12X write as long as it had SL bitsetting.

The 2.18 SE has booktype setting for +R DL, +R SL is by default set to DVD-ROM . It still doesn't have +RW setting.

No this isn't correct, try the latest DVDInfoPro build, it should show only support for DVD+R DL

Mad Dog has posted 3500 oem 2.FA fw no idea what its got over official 2.18 but for sure its bitsetting for +R +RW +R DL

http://www.mdmm.com/drivers/OpticalDrives/16XDVD9_FW_2FA.exe

MadDog 2.FA
CD-R version: 1.24
CD-RW version: 1.24
DVD-R version: 1.37
DVD-RW version: 1.33
DVD+R version: 1.56g
DVD+RW version: 1.37
DVD+R9 version: 1.24r

2.18 official: 1.25 1.24 1.40 1.35 1.58g 1.37 1.26
MD 2.F9: 1.24 1.24 1.37 1.33 1.56g 1.37 1.24g

Only change from F9 appears to be +R9 write strategy from 24g to 24r. Nothing else appears to have changed. 2.18 is still better except for the bitsetting part.

Hi, new guy here.

I have a question about upgrading the firmware on a nec 3500AG
Do I really have to uninstall the intel AA and whatever else is adviced by the installer?
The current firmware is 2.16, and the latest I donwloaded from NEC's website, today, is 2.17

Can someone please tell me where to buy TDK 003 16X Media or any other 16X media

TIA!!!
