WHen I try to burn a cd from my drive, depending on the program the message varies somewhat but they all say either the drive isn't ready or there is not a disc in the drive or a combination of both. If I try to play a cd or game from a cd off of this drive, it says there's no disc in it. When I put a disc in and the tray goes in, you can hear it doing something and it does this for a few seconds and then stops. If the disc automatically loads up normally, it doesn't through this drive. I don't know if it's related, but the same time the cd-r/rw went out, the computer froze up and continues to freeze up for seemingly no reason. Sometimes it is just the program running that freezes up and the mouse will still move, other times the whole thing stops or I get the blue screen or just the wallpaper with no icons or start/task bar. Can anyone help?

running a gateway.... WIN ME, don't know what other details are needed.... When I look in control panels and system for the cd-r/rw, it says the device is working properly, but it doesn't work at all. Every now and then, when the comp. is started up, it says that the cd-r/rw couldn't be detected or something like that, it's been so long since I've seen it....

rmars007: Hello, And welcome to the forum!

It really sounds like your drive has gone to CD Burners Club in the sky!, is it an old drive?

Here are some things to check:
Connections!: check the data cable both on the mother board and the CD-Writer, as well as the power to the CD Writer
ASPI Layer: Make sure that you're runnning the ASPI layer verison 4.60 and not the latest one (because it's buggy), you can get them from adaptec's web site.
Firmware: It's unlikely to be the culprit, but it's worth a shot to update the firmware on your drive if it's available, oyu'll find the latest firmware on the manufacturer's web page.

and if all else fails, try the drive on a friend's PC.

rmars007 -> RE: Philips PCRW804 (11/28/2002 3:10:59 AM)

The drive's about a year old, maybe a couple of months more.... nothing has been touched as far as the aspi stuff. I've noticed that when the computer freezes, I can't get the cd-r/rw drive to open up but the regular cd-rom drive works.

Dolphinius_Rex -> RE: Philips PCRW804 (11/28/2002 5:14:24 AM)

well, if the drive clicks a lot, then you motor is probably going. But if it freezes your computer like that, maybe it's the laser dying...maybe both? what brand is it? (is it the Philips PCRW804??)

rmars007 -> RE: Philips PCRW804 (11/28/2002 7:17:13 PM)

the philips website says it is.... It came with the computer so I had to do some researching.... Internal 8x4x32x cd-r/rw.... the site said it was a PCRW804/K17....

Hello,

I'm trying to fix a PCRW804 drive for a friend. Finally, after using the ASPI-Fix patch I managed to update the firmware to version 2.5. I then tried to write a cd but the writer, though not crashing the system or even rebooting it as it tended to before, doesn't want to write. It tells me the cd I put into the drive is not a recordable cd.

In Nero it says that "The Medium is Empty" and according to the drive it's a read-only cd. I know this is not so since my Plextor SCSI (hail to Plextor) recognizes the cd perfectly being empty and recordable.

I tried ASPI versions 4.71 and 4.6 (the one with the aspi fix) but neither work. I also tried a more expensive brand of cd but alas with the same results. I'm using Windows 2000.

Also, the drive doesn't read 'normal' cd's either. When I click on it in the Windows Explorer it says "Drive not accessible, Incorrect Function" or "Please insert a disc into drive G:" while there is a disc in there.

Could somebody help me get this drive working or should I just throw it in the garbage can?

[:D][:D]
Can someone please email (ariedford@yahoo.com) the driver for the philips pcrw804. I had to re-image a system and the driver was lost... Favor's will be returned...

krustnika -> RE: Philips PCRW804 (1/5/2003 3:48:50 AM)

can you send me the driver for Philips CDD 4801 CD-R/RW. I am running it on Windows ME and although the system recognizes it as a valid drive I cannot neither read nor write with it.

Thanx
