I'm getting a fair amount of email in response to this thread. Since I can't edit the original thread, here are
instructions on upgrading your ND-6450A to DL support:

Step 1:
Download binflash (get the Win32 GUI version) from here, http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

Step 2:
Download stock firmware, 2.23 6500A (or whichever is the newest build) from the "Attachments" in the second message in this thread, http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=84345

(As of this writing, 223_14.10.04.rar is the newest, stock, 6500A firmware and it works with the ND-6450A)

Step 3: (OPTIONAL)
Backup your current firmware. If something goes wrong, this is your recovery:

Select your ND-6450A drive from the drop down menu in binflash and select "Dump."

Make up a filename (any filename) and put this firmware somewhere safe just in case your flash fails.

Step 4:
Select "Flash" in Binflash and choose the firmware you downloaded in Step 2. For me this file is named 223_14.10.04.bin.

Binflash will go through its motions and tell you to reboot to recognize your new firmware.

Step 4:
Reboot. Upon restart you should see a "New hardware found" dialog while windows recognized your drive as the 6500A.

---

Hope I didn't miss anything, this is a pretty simple process--if you have any trouble consult the official ND-6500A firmware overview thread for the answers to most/all your questions (http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=84345).

And remember, you will probably VOID YOUR WARRANTY when you flash non-stock firmware.

If you aren't comfortable doing this, DON'T DO IT. While many people have had success flashing their ND-6450A to the ND-6500A firmware, not all machines are the same and you do run the very real risk of disabling your drive.

Use caution, have fun, and enjoy DL burning!

OK, so you used Binflash. I am looking at the GUI Windows version. There are I believe three *.bin files in the zip file. One is I believe 6500ORIG.bin. So is this the bin file that you used?

Also what media are you using Dual Layer.

Also if I then use AnyDVD and CloneDVD will it copy a complete disk to a DL disk without compressing it?

I'm working on the stiring up guts to obtain the you know what to flash the ND-6450A drive that I have.

OK, put me on the list as having those things you mentioned about! Large Set. I have flashed my ND-6450A drive with the 6500ORIG.bin file version 2.23

Figured that was the best choice to go with.

Rebooted and Nero tools shows it to be a ND-6500A with the DVD+R DL having a check mark.

Understand the best DL medial to use is Verbatium?

Does this mean that using a DL media that CLONEDVD will not have to compress a disk to copy it?

OH, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

1st yes you are correct, if you use Verbatim DL media you won't have to compress the movie with DVD Shrink, just DVD Copy

I understand you not wanting to flash your drive for warranty reasons, but you could always flash it back if needed! The difference is tremendous! But it's up to you!
