I've stumbled upon this forum as I'm in need of a fix for my newly aquired NEC3500AG DVD burner. This is what has me confused.. I look at the box and this drives claims to be 16x DVD-ROM. Yet for some odd reason when I go to extract/read a DVD any program I use only gets a 2x read speed. Now after some reading online I've seen alot of talk about "riplock", and how NEC did something with the max read speed so the drive wouldn't be as noisy. Well, I bought this drive to rip/read DVD's faster, not to be impressed with it's uber stealthness, lol.

Does anyone out there have any fixes for this? I'm sure I can't be the only one out there with this problem!

But to note, the drive burns fine @8x with Ritek DVD-R media.

For that purpose i would suggest using an un-official firmware that removes Riplock like 2.18SE Liggy

With the pre-installed 2.16 firmware I was reading at 2x. With the latest NEC firmware from the official site (2.18), I'm reading at 3-4.5x. I tried using "2.18_liggy_ritek_se.bin" and it downed my readtime to 1x. ????

serith are you sure? none else has reported this, the firmware will work 100% removing DVD ripping limits, might want to check the DMA status of your drive
