Agreed, ASPI layer is not necessary, but I tried it just for the heck of it
(Plextools do not run regardless of ASPI layer installed or not).

What is even stranger is that Plextools run OK. Plextools PRO is the problem!

Hi guys!

Due to the 1c04 firmware the review will be released on Tuesday, meaning tomorrow. Sorry about that.

@ Cal 02

Sorry mate for not answering your question yet. You said:
"...do you think DVD drives are "Topped-out" at the 16x reading & writing??"

In reading, since we all know the 16X is the limit, I personaly don't expect anything better. There are drives with strong error correction and other with lowest. The only good thing that might happen, which I still believe will not, is that almost all drives to have much over the average performance.

In writing, always from my point of view, I think there is space for further improvement. Not in speed off course but in stability and reliability. Unfortunately technology before something topps out there is always the newer proposal.

Yeah, like Blu-ray and HD-DVD???

Thanks for the full review.
As I read it, it seems the 716 MAY become quite a superior drive sometime in the future.

Right now, it is not.

I am very gratefull for all your hard work, and will return the unopened drive to Best Buy today.
Perhap later it will improve further (hardware ver. 03?), and come down in price as well.
For right now I'm going to enjoy my new Benq 1620.

After reading the page 29 of the full review, the page about the new TA test in Plextools
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=11953&PageId=28

I suggest that people read this link:
http://home.arcor.de/escalator/6xdl/6xd.html
and tell what's the difference ...

I would like to know why you wrote in your review that the PX-716A doesn't support C2 errors if it will report C2 errors from Q-Check and if it will rip audio with Plextools Pro at error recovery level 5 ...

Maybe you should be more specific and write that EAC DAE Quality does not support C2 retrieval from the PX-716A ... the PX-712A's C2 error reporting wasn't supported either up to the recent EAC version.

Th review itself is very good by the way ... although I would conclude worse writing quality :)

I just try to find out if this new TA test is reliable or not. I mean are the results on the same type of DVD so different from one burn to a other

There are of course differences in the conditions used by "'escalator" the link I put on line:
- he did not use the same media
- the use of this new beta 1.c04 firmware
- he burned a video not a Nero CD DVD Speed test disc
The burn by escalator was even made at 6X on a double layer DVD+R which should be more difficult for the burner and the TA test gives mostly the result "Excellent".
Do you think only this new firmware can make such a diffrence or is the PX-716A so good at double layer burning like some people suggest...

I never had any "bad-bad-bad" result on any media I usually use.
I burn mostly slowly with: "always PoweRec on and Autostrategy on"

I just suggest that you publish more than one TA test

Get a copy of the new 'ct magazine ... there is a 16x DVD ReWriter and media roundup ... they wrote that Plextools' TA is not more than a joke due to its unreliable behaviour and inaccurate reporting.

Unfortunately this is market.

BTW below is the link to the full review of the 716:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=11953

I hope you'll find it interesting...

Hey Minos, is it possible that you could let the forum KNOW if there has been any changes concerning the Plextor PX-712 drive? Thanks!

The Bad
Higher retail price than already selling 8X DVD burners
Doesn't support writing of DVD+R Double Layer media
Medium CD error correction (could be fixed with firmware upgrade?)
Doesn't backup SafeDisc2 v2.9x+ protected discs
Doesn't support Premium's writing method for SecuROM v4.8xx protected discs
Doesn't support reading of DVD-RAM media (could be fixed with firmware upgrade?)
Doesn't support BookType setting for DVD+R/RW media (could be fixed with firmware upgrade?)
Retail package doesn't include any DVD recordable/re-writable media

- Like to be fixed
Reading problems with ABEX TDV-541
Sometimes recognition of DVD-R media takes too long (up to 1minute!)
High C1/C2 errors with specific media at 48X
Recognize process of burned DVD+R9 Double Layer media
Improved functionality of Q-Check tests

Can I buy this 'ct magazine in France or Germany ?
Are articles from this magazine sometimes put on line ?
