well got me new drive today and tried to update firmware
but keep getting same error it gets as far as erasing block 6
and thats it , using necwinflash v0.95

yep tried that it just seems to stick on block 6 then comes back with error while writing block 7, Ive also tried the official update and that just stalls half way, also tried moving the drive over to another machine but same problem.

Will try to take it back tomorrow and see if I can get it replaced as I think its had it

strange problem are you had your drive installed as internal IDE or with USB2.0 case?

IDE and it seems that xp pro thinks the drive is an nd 3100a

Yep, go to http://tdb.rpc1.org/ and download DOS flasher then perform firmware upgrade in pure DOS mode and maybe you wont need to replace your drive. Also connect it to the IDE not USB before doing that.

yes I should have tried the dos flasher, got the drive replaced today and will flash it when I need to at the moment it seems to work ok with all the media I have.
