Cool firmware so far. Rips DL DVDs faster than the Dangerous Brothers 216, IMO.

The drive also seems (far) more tolerant of scratched and dirty discs.

Still burns Ritek R03 (8x +R) at 4x only. I am still looking for some firmware which will acommodate this media.
... Can't testify about DL capabilities as I don't use that.

Excellent collection of firmware, Emperor !!

Edit: The drive now reports to the OS as TDK 1616n (not that it really matters). Nero also lists speeds only 1-6X with no disc, which doesn't matter either according to eros et al (see main 3500 FW thread).

Hi there,

Your OS is reporting TDK 1616n because you used the TDK firmware, you should use the TDK -> NEC firmware, look at the first page for details :

http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=82999&mpage=1&key=
http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=82999&mpage=1&key=#

BTW can you please tell me what were your reading results regarding DVD+DL media (I don't mean DVD-ROM DL "CSS or not" , but recorded DL media like Verbatim and Ritek)?
Because mine can only start at 2x and a Max of 4x ( so a 7Giga disc takes 30 min to rip ) :(.

Thanks.
Regards,

FJorgeR.

Um, so in other words use the second file in the attachment, the png, instead of the first one? I basically just unpacked and ran the first file, the rar.

EDIT: Oh, a png is a picture ! I knew that !

Well, I don't have any burned DL to test with. But I would really expect that to be contingent upon the burn quality, and even with a good burned +R9 disc I wouldn't expect the same results as with a -ROM.

Well that's strange!

Just open the RAR, extract the bin file, and open it with an Hex editor (don't change a thing) and search for "TDK" string. If you manage to found one okay you have in fact a TDK firmware, and in that case simply try to download the file again and repeat the procedure, because something is wrong!
If no TDK string is found, search again but this time "NEC" if it's okay try to upgrade your firmware again.

Regards,

FJorgeR.

I think that Moose1309 got the wrong v2.C8SE build, it has been tested and the renamed v2.C8SE works just fine

Which I have done, and Windows now correctly identifies the burner as an ND-3500AG ! Don't know what happened there, it could be problem with Windows, my PC, whatever.

Thanks a ton Emp

Hey I just bought the DVD+/-RW 16x+|NEC ND-3500A and I need to know what would be the best firmware to use. I am planning on using mostly AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 to copy my friend's DVDs. Thanks in advance.

**Edit** Also, I need to know what would be the best blank media to use. I heard the Ritek G05 8x are good but I have no idea. Thanks.

EDIT: just a warning, buffer under run protection IS NOT SUPPORTED with the 2.c8 firmware version.

I just got the NEC drive and using the 2.C8 firmware.

writing memorex 4x dvd+rw's works fine as wel las reading it. can read the dvd movie backup on the toshiba dvd-player

Writing to 8x fuiji dvd+r's took some time at 16x. It took about 6 minutes to burn when it should take 4 minutes. So best bet would be to stay at 12x with this drive, media, and firmware combo. I got the 25pack of 8x media for 15 bucks so ya. The 4x dvd+rw's were 20 bucks for a pack of 10.

I haven't tried dvd-r's or dvd-rw's yet. I only have 2x dvd-rw's though and 4x dvd-rs so not much of a test.

I don't have any dvd+r's DL to test on.

I hope to see a real official firmware update soon =(. But all in all very happy with it so far. Bought it at Newegg for 72.99 w/ free shiping. Ordered it saturday and got it wednesday.

thanks!

6 minutes is normal for 16X. The actual burn time is around 5:50 with lead out...about 6:10. The disk starts at 6X and climbs. What you got for speed IS 16X.

ahhh ok cool, make sense, thanks.

another comment, i swtiched back breifly to 2.16 firmware that i backed up. I tried reading data cd's and it wouldn't let me see what was on the disk. I tried it with games and many other cd's/dvd's and it wouldn't let me see what was on the disk (explore). It would run fine but not explore. I then switched back to 2.C8 and it worked fine afterwards. I was able to browse the cd/dvd's contents.

Did NEC release such a crappy firmware like this or did the 2.C8 mess up my drive?

thanks!

Tell you what...if 2.c8 works...I'd stay with it until something better comes along. I am using 2.17 on my drive and have no complaints.

Hey I have a problem like the one mentioned before by xxsk8er101xx. I can't explore the NEC drive and whenever I put a DVD in there it says that there is no disc in the drive. Is there a solution?
