yep, i know.
often asked.

i am also a member on the German movie2digital-board.
there, nearly everyone scans his burns with a liteon DVD-Rom.

here, everyone with a liteon DVD-burner.

1) what is the best method ?
2) why is the DVD-burner more accurate ?
3) i heard the DVD-burner should not be used because of its good error-correction. ????
4) why should the standard scan -speed on DVD-burners be set to 4x and not 8x or even @max???

please help me out.
i have a DVD-burner (LiteOn 812@832, codeking-FW) and a LiteOn 167T.

thank you so much!!!

Most times when people suggests different DVD-ROM and a burner for ripping and recording depends on the ability of the burner to rip movies, bad reader, and that your burner will last half time.

For example NEC drives were not too good in DVD reading, so and ripping. In that case several owners choose an extra drive as a reader since the NEC are famous for their burning quality.

Hi LOU and welcome to our forums...

I will try to clear this for you...There isn't a correct/false result when either using LiteON DVDRW/DVDROM drives. All results are CORRECT!

The PI/PIF numbers are not physical errors (like scratches) but are the the results of the reading abilities of the specific pickup/chipset combination.

That means a disc that can read perfectly at one model (832S) can also be un-readable to other model (811S), or with speed drops at other (LTD-166S).

Which reader should you use? The one that gives the less, medium or the highest error rates? No-one can give you an definatly answer, at least without proving its statements are correct.

For example we have noticed that:

* sometimes 811S gives PI/PIF error rates that matches the famous CATS.
* 832S generally gives much lower PI/PIF error rates than 811S
* 1213S again give much lower PI/PIF error rates than 811S

Which reading speed shoud you select? 1X/2X/4X/6X/8X? Again, no-one can give you too a definatly answer, proving its statements are correct.

The believe that 4X CLV is correct/ok/good to use is simply outrageous...Reading this thread will unveil the whole truth to you.

Since there are so many problems with LiteON drives, we decided to use a reading graph at 16X with 167T and Plextor PX-712A to measure discs...

Of course everyone its free to make its own testing procedure, however should make at least a research, since users can be mislead very...easily

LOU i cannot give a correct answer, if you should use 451S/811S/812S/32S, make your own tests and decide what you need more, less or more error rates

You never can be sure if the results are real.

Plextools simply display what the PX-712A drive returns when reading DVD recordable media...For sure there is constinency (scan the disc at two PX-712A will return almost same error rates). The absolute values are not compared with CATS.

Actually, I should add this:

The author of kProbe Karr Wang has stated that due to the fact how dvd-rom drives are engineered, the errors dvd-rom report when scanning dvd discs are not necessarily right.

By right I mean that they do not necessarily report the correct amount of errors that the drive actually uses itself, when doing error correction.

That is, I would not use LiteOn dvd-rom drives for error checking on DVD media.

Some related discussion on the subject (at CD Freaks):

This same applies to other dvd-rom and dvd/cdrw combo drives that are based on the Mediatek chipset, such as some Toshiba DVD-ROM/LG drives.

The only dvd-rom that I've had that produces somewhat useful looking scans (with Nero CD-DVD speed) based on my preliminary testing is the AOpen DVD-1648/AAP.

Then why does my Lite-on reader ALWAYS a MINIMUM of 1 PIF in the chart???? (ie 0-1 is SOLID red, only values ABOVE 1 show)

So that's why we decided to "drop" the KProbe scans, useful to some people, rather mislead i imagine for others

I use LG 4160B to burn DVD and LiteOn 165H DVD-Rom to scan, but my result is terrible!
Why? is it normal for Lite On DVD-ROM?

8xDVD+R MCC003 @12x

4xDVD+R OptodiscoR4 @4x

MCC003's quality is very low for LG? (it is different from Review and my test!) Can anyone answer me what wrong? Thanks!
