Every since I installed InCD ver 3.51, it has acted flacky. For the most part, it works OK but periodically it would not recognize my formated CD's. I would play around ejecting and inserting them and finally they would be recognized by InCD.

Thinking about this for a while, it dawned on me that the problems appeared all related to the initial startup phase processing. I also forgot I had ActiveDisk operational for my Iomega Zip100 drive.

I deactivated ActiveShare and InCD works fine now.

I am still up in the air on the auto insert CD feature. I had it off for a while but the InCD help doc says to turn in on so now I presently have it on. I do know when it's on and InCD is active, it affects my machine performance.

Your information on ActiveDisc and ActiveShare could help other users. In general, Zip drives have been known to conflict with InCD.

In an earlier message of another thread, you wrote:

InCD documentation is outdated, and in another thread CCampbell of Ahead wrote that they were not aware of any issues with Autorun on or off for Win2K. Further, some users must have AutoInsert Notification on for InCD under Win98x. All in all, I'd advise you to turn it off again. Did you have problems when it was off?

Pertaining to auto inset notification, I have been talking to the people at Cendyne from whom I purchased my Liteon. They also have concluded that InCD does cycle stealing.

I think it was in this packet writing forum that I saw a reference to something I have observed on my machine. If InCD is active and a packet formatted CDRW disk is present in the drive, it appears to deactivate the cycle stealing. Accordingly, I would recommend that auto insert notification be left on since Ahead recommends that it be set on for InCD; just make sure a packet writing CDRW is inserted in the drive.

A side bar comment is if you reference Nero's tech comments at their web site on Burning Rom settings, they recommend that auto insertion be turned off for the CD drive! Flip a coin?

Bottom line is I think most people are activating InCD via Start|Programs so the auto insertion setting is academic.

Picked this up from the authoring thread. Maybe this resolves the auto insertion setting once and for all. Finally, Ahead has found a way to dynamically turn off auto insertion?

Found quite a few postings like this on the web that confirm the cycle stealing going on when auto insertion on CD drive is activated:

Disable CD-ROM notification
Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> CD-ROM ->
your CD-ROM Properties -> Settings (check AutoInsert Notification=off)

This function is activated by default. It checks approximately once per second whether a CD-ROM is inserted (or changed) or not. This wouldn't be a problem, but the check blocks the bus and the CPU completely for a short moment. Your are more than lucky if you got aware of it by seeing the hard disk LED flashing everytime you hear a drop out! To deactivate it: Device Manager/CD-ROM/Properties, un-check 'Auto insert notification'. Also check if DMA is activated. Attention: Some CD-ROM burn programs activate the notification automatically when they are started, without telling you this.
