Seems like this thread has hibernated or maybe this burner has gone obsolete. Unfortunately, I still have the 3500-AG and still is in need of the latest firmware. I recently purchased new media, Memorex DVD-R 16X and I'm only burning at 2x. Can somebody please direct me to a site where I can upgrade my drivers and how to check what version my burner currently has?

Thanks.

I use DVD Shrink 3.2

Here is the latest official firmware for the NEC ND-3500A(G) v2.1A.
http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/

You can also try Liggy & Dee's page.  http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/
If you just want a v2.1A with RipLock and/or RPC1, then use one of the Original Firmware v2.1A.
If you just want a v2.1A with Bitsetting + RipLock and/or RPC1, then use one of the Liggy's Bitsetting Firmware v2.1A.
If you want to try that plus media hacks, then one of Dee's v2.TG is the latest.  Discussion for that one is here:  http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=144344

You cannot update the firmware for the installed optical drives using the duplicator firmware upgrade process; this is for updating the firmware of the duplicator controller.
To update the firmware of the drives they have to be installed in a PC.

Does this new 2.1B version allow PI/PIF scanning on the NEC 3500 using CD-DVD Speed ?

like the 2.R8 version that we have been waiting for a so long time ...

Hello,
I got an nec 3500 drive, and I just upgraded it to 2.1b firmware (no region, no rpc). I got a couple of questions.
1 - is it possible to write to smartbuy (prodisc dvd+r) DL media with this drive ? (with another firmware ?)
2 - I´m trying to overburn a tyg02 dvd-r media (3 megs) with no luck (using nero 7.0.8.2). do I have any chance or should I give up ?

many thanks.

http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/

Use Liggy's Binflash to update the firmware.  It can take either the .bin or .exe firmware files as input.

Hi, I'm running a NEC ND-3500A drive with Firmware v2.16
Operating System is Windows 2000 Professional
The rated maximum speeds for it are 16x write to DVD+R/-R, 4x write to +/-RW and +R DL (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=10711)

However, using Nero7 Ultra, the maximum listed speed is 4x when I insert a 16x rated Maxell DVD+R, 16x rated FujiFilm DVD+R, or 16x rated TDK DVD+R blank media (all 4.7GB single layer discs).
Up to 12x is listed when 8x rated Memorex DVD-R media is used, and I have not tried any DL discs in the drive (I don't have any on hand)
I succesfully burned a DVD+R at 4x, and a mini DVD-R at 2x (1.4GB)
Without any disc inserted, the 1x - 6x options are listed.

Is there a suggested firmware version to help resolve this problem?
If anyone can help I'd like to know why this is occuring, and what steps can I take to resolve the problem?

thanks,
Christian

Escudero, there are newer firmware versions for your NEC ND-3500AG drive.
The latest official version is 2.1B and it contains support for some newer media types, perhaps even the media you have.

You can get 2.1B firmware here from NEC Germany.

If you're interested in unofficial firmware you can have a look at the Liggy+Dee NEC 3500 homepage.

I get a message that reads "The provided NEC firmware upgrade should not be used with external USB/FireWire drives of with OEM drives from HP, DELL, ...., or any other OEM manufacturer. If you wish to update the firmware on an OEM drive, please contact the dealer or manufacturer" when I go to cdr-info.com. I don't know what this means. I am trying to upgrade the firmware on my NEC model: ND-3550A. I have a dell computer. Are they refering to the hard drive when they say OEM drive? If so how do I upgrade the firmware on this burner? Also how do I post a message to this forum? This is the first time I have used it and I could not locate a post new message icon.

Hi friend! I assume the message comes from the official updater, if you use Binflash, you will overpass this, just grab 2.1B and binflash and will do the job

I just updated the firmware for my NEC ND-3500AG with the official utility from http://www.de.nec.de/software/2348_FW_ND-3500A_win21B.zip in windows 2000 with out any problems.

I first disconnected the DVD player (slave) so I left on the secondary cable the NEC as master. Then I disabled the DMA for the secondary bus as required in the instructions (selected PIO mode). I booted in safe mode and I run the utility with success, re-enabled DMA and rebooted.

AND it still sees the Verbatim dual layer 4x 8.5GB as 3.99GB. The Nero info tool gives me a media id: MKM 01RD30 also at 3.99GB.

I had many problems with Verbatim with other burners in the past so I’m not going to buy that @#!!!*&% brand again no matter what! TDK has been always flawless for me. I did the mistake and bought a 5 pack Verbatim because TDK was out of stock and I regret it. No more that crap from now on!
